Alexander sat near the docks in oldtown in the early morning, in his right hand he held his daughter Corinne’s hand and in his left was the hand of Shauna Varner his friend’s charge. Behind him his boys and Cyrus Varner splashed in the puddles.
“Daddy, why did we have to get here so early?” Corinne said rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
“Because that is when the ship comes in sweetie,” Alex responded, “It’s a surprise that I want you and your brothers to see first hand.
The boys got into a scuffle as Loren and Cyrus got into an argument, they were play fighting and one of the boys hit the other harder then was deemed necessary and a fight ensued.
“Save your energy boys, if you want to fight I will ensure it is done right later, but for now cool it.” The icy stare that Alex gave, told them he meant business.
The boys quickly forgot their squabble and began a game of splashing Dorian, Alexander’s youngest son, born while Dacey was in captivity in the Red Keep. Alex was going to say something but, since Dorian was laughing he let them have their fun.
“All right, heres our ship,” Alex said as a large merchant pulled in and began to talk with the custom officials. Alexander strolled up to the docks and soon the ship was cleared as not even the famous oldtown bureaucracy wanted to hold up the Lord Regent’s ship.
After about twenty minutes, ten horses began to be unloaded from the ship one at a time. They were beautiful Dornish Stallions, fierce and strong just like the people with the same indomitable will.
Behind the Stallions came ten more docile horses that were more distinguishable of a horse bred in the Reach. Intelligent and sure footed these horses had served with distinction in the Dornish Campaign but with their owner deceased Alexander had taken to caring for them.
Behind them came 7 horses that were yet of full size. The yearlings were wide eyed by the bustling city scape and one of them through a fit before it was brought under control by the trainer.
“Any trouble?” Alexander said to the Trainer when the last of the horses were unloaded.
“The little ones didn’t eat much, but the seas were good to us and the horses seemed to make it okay. The Stallions didn’t care much for the confines of the ship but they eventually made it all right. . . probably itching for a run though.”
Alexander nodded, the girls were very excited to see all the horses, “Uncle Alex, your horses are very pretty,” Shauna said.
“Well the little ones are for you children, hopefully you all can agree on a different one.” Alex said with a smile as the girls eyes grew wide.
“Their for us Daddy?” Corinne said.
“Yes but you will have to learn to take care of them proper, it will be a lot of work but if you are going to be an Irwyn you have to learn to ride.” Corinne gave an excited gasp and hugged her father. The two girls immediately began to discuss which of the seven horses they wanted.
The boys having lost interest in splashing baby Dorian came bounding up when they heard that one of the horses was to be theirs. Alexander gave Cyrus the first choice among the boys who immediately picked the jet black colt with the white star on his forehead, which was obviously the one that Loren had wanted as well. While initially disappointed, Loren eventually settled on a chestnut colt who seemed to pick him as the horse came right up to him and let him pet his nose.
Alex smiled, “that’s a good sign Loren, a horse and rider need to become fast friends and you are already well on you way.”
Alexander hoisted Dorian up on to his shoulders so he could pick his horse. He settled for the smallest bay filly and even though it would be a year at the earliest before he rode her he was happy with his choice.
Alexander turned to the stewards, “Okay please take the large ones back to uplands for the Stable that is being constructed there. The little ones need to be fitted for a saddle and broken in before my children ride them to King’s Landing. Their lessons should start tomorrow morning if the horses are ready.”
The servants bowed and began to make it so. As the Children and Alex made their way back to the Hightower he could not be sure who was more pleased, himself or the children.
