"I did not. I stayed with my father in King's Landing. I've never really been away from the Vale or Crownlands, ser. What, er..."

"You choking on your own tongue, or do you have a question?" the Dornish man asked with a chuckle.

"Well, ser..." Scot trailed off once more, but picked it back up. "Ser Osney, what were you doing during... The troubles in Dorne?"

"I was abroad, serving with the Second Sons, although in truth I am not even second son, I'm more like fifth." Ser Osney chuckled. "Why, had I been in Dorne, on which side should I have been fighting?"

"I only know of Dorne what I've read in books, so I can't claim to understand how a Dornishman feels... but, it's a very complicated matter. Legally, you must be loyal to your liege, but if your Lord rebels against your King, on which side do you fall? Both are correct. I'd imagine it depends on the Lord, and also on the King, and even more so on the individual..." Scot trailed off, suddenly embarrassed.

"True enough. The law is good as far as it will carry you, but the law is only of use when one side is right, and the other side is wrong. What happens when both sides have claim? Well, then there is a right above all law. The right of the sword. Its why we have trial by combat. The Seven know.. you do follow the seven don't you?" the Dornishman asked, before continuing, "the Seven know whose right and whose wrong, and it just happens they choose the man whose the most practiced with a blade... every... single... time." He smiled at the squire.

Scot smiled back, feeling easier. "That would be true enough. I do follow the Seven, though I am blood of the First Men. Your suggestion that law is most useful when one side is right and the other wrong. What did you think of the place of your countrymen in those troubles?"

"We know that oath breaking is wrong. If you swear an oath, you should keep it. The Martells swore to the Iron throne, and than they broke it. That's no different than me swearing my oath to my liege, and than breaking it. But than, if the Martells break their oath, it doesn't make me breaking my oath right? Does it?" The Dornishman asked, quizzing the youth.

"Your oath to your liegelord you mean? As in, though the Martells foreswore themselves, are you then still bound to your oath to them as a bannerman?"

"That is the question, is it not?" the Dornishman replied, as he filled both cups with wine.

"That is the question." Scot smiled. "We've returned to where we started. Your prior suggestion of trial by combat would suggest Dorne was wrong to rise..." Scot realized then he might have said too much so he tried to qualify his statement. "It's difficult for me to be impartial in any case, as the Vale has been very pro-Crown for as long as I've been alive."

The Dornishman nodded, "All other facts being equal, the loser is always in the wrong. And you're a lucky man to come from a place where your two masters are in such agreement. Course your brother speaks with the King's own voice, so I imagine that helps a bit. Never been a Dornish hand, and not like to be one, I shouldn't think."

Scot grunted. "Roland is the Crown's man now, so long as he's the Hand. He's such that his whole life is to serve."

"That seems an ill fate to you? I don't hear approval in your voice." Ser Osney asked, drinking his wine cup till it was empty.

Scot peered at his wine glass, as if it were filled with evil. "No, no. I love my brother, and believe him a great man. It's just that it's like he forgot us. He seems neither a Valeman or a Royce. It seems even his beautiful wife feels in the cold. He once was warm if dutiful."
