Ser Dwayne was working with his hammer again. But this time with his smith's hammer, not his warhammer. A young apprentice was fueling the fires, as he waited for the steel to turn into the right colour. Slowly the steel turned into a bright, glowing red. Ser Dwayne waited, for it was still to hard. If he started working it now, the metal would rather break then bend. As time passed, the red turned into orange, and then slowly into yellow. This was the correct moment, he knew, when the steel was between yellow and orange. Any longer and the steel would turn white, before melting. So now he started to work the steel.
Sparks flew around as his hammer made contact with the steel, but ser Dwayne kept concentrating on his work, paying no attention to the sweat dripping down his face. His blows where stronger than they used to be, but also a tad more clumsy. He began to feel it in his arms and chest to. It wasn't as heavy as his normal trainings, but he wasn't used to the heat like he used to be, so quickly he found himself heaving and puffing, and the hammer felt heavier with every blow. But with every blow some of his old skill came back, and slowly the steel was being pounded in the shape of a breastplate.
A few days later, ser Dwayne rode to a village close to the Dreadfort, together with one of the soldiers. They dismounted before a little house that was being repaired, and entered. An old man sat in a chair, and looked up as the two entered. "Can i help you?"
Ser Dwayne nodded to the man, and his soldier showed the man two breastplates. One was ser Dwayne's old breastplate, the second was the one he had forged some days ago. Ser Dwayne pointed to the sigil on his old breastplate, the two crossed hammers of house Ironhammer. "I want you to make a new sigil on the other breastplate," ser Dwayne told the man, "i want to keep the two hammers, but they will not cross now. They will stand straight, next to eachother. And furthermore, i want a third hammer between those two."
Then he showed the man the warhammer made of stone, the one Mag Stane had given him. "This one," he said, "between the other two, towering a little above them. Can you do it?"
"Ofcourse," the man said, "it's been busy though, it will take a few days."
"I shall be back next week," said the Ironhammer, "take your time. If it pleases me, you will be rewarded well."
The old man nodded, and the two men left the store.
