Alexander sat up on his recliner. While he still felt a bit uncomfortable because of his wounds, he did his best to maintain a pleasant demeanor. His guards had increased considerably since the attack, although Alexander still tried to maintain a regular routine and tried to ignore their overbearing presence.
Despite many people who had asked him to leave Dorne because of the attempt on his life, the General dismissed it saying that he still had work to do in Dorne and if Martell was determined to kill him she had the means to strike in the Far Reach as well.
Ser Keldon stood close to his Lord, his conscious still suffering greatly from the near miss, and he was determined to prevent another attempt on Alex’s life. Keldon supervised the hiring of all new staff from the cooks to the men at arms and personally inspected the walls for weak spots. Trees and shrubs that were too close to the walls or towers were cut back and a series of oil lanterns were installed so that the defenders could more easily see anyone approaching the keep at day or night.
Ser Keldon expanded his Lord’s security detail so that at least two of Alexander’s four men, Ser Goodwin, Shelton, Ramsey or Chauncey, was with him at all times.
In more positive news, the gangs in Sunspear had been brought to heel and construction now started on rebuilding Sunspear. Construction began with rebuilding the port area and then proceeded to the Merchant quarter. Alexander’s men worked with the Dornish small folk to help rebuild the city, although the relationship was not as warm as it was when Lord Tarly led his efforts along the riverbank.
Alexander negotiated with the Merchant houses, providing loans for the Dornish merchants to restock their inventory, if they agreed to use merchant ships from Oldtown as their carriers and suppliers. The loans and rebuilding projects were paid for by the treasury of the Martells that was left in the city.
Over the months, the small folk began to return to Sunspear and life began to return to normal for the large Dornish city, although at half of its previous level. Crime was down, at least for those merchants and craftsmen that worked with the Governor General, troublemakers were quickly but quietly removed before incident and a local Dornish council with supervision from Irwyn’s people were allowed to make laws and govern the city.
Alexander sent out messengers to find those Dornish men and women with claims on the occupied land and asked them to return to Godsgrace to swear fealty to the King and negotiate their legitimization or terms of gaining claim on their lands. While Alexander disagreed with returning the land, the King’s Hand made it clear that where possible the land would return to the hands of a Dornish person loyal to the King.
Over the next couple of months people would eventually return to Godsgrace to stake their claim. It was a slow start but after the rebuilding of the physical infrastructure, the political infrastructure of the New Dorne also required a major overhaul.
Every day that Alexander lived in Dorne was a dangerous one but he did what he could to try and stabilize the area and make it more bearable for the people. His men were told to stay out of public view and every effort was made to give orders through a willing Dornish collaborator then directly from Far Reach soldiers.
