Alexander sat in prayer at the Castle Sept at Godsgrace, he kneeled before the statue of the Smith, “Mighty Smith, I know not what you plan for my family or the realm, I trust only that the evil that has been done to my line was in the service of your intricate plan to bring a lasting peace to the Kingdom of Westeros. I have not been a good steward of the gifts the seven have given me, I have fought for personal honor and forgotten that as Lords we have been appointed to administer to your flock and provide with them the resources to serve your will and the rest of the seven,” Alexander paused before continuing.
“I know that I have not always done what was right, and while I do not expect absolution for my sins I pray that I can be of future service to work your plan to completion.”
Alexander rose and then turned, he returned to his solar where he listened to the briefings from his men about the status of the rebuilding efforts in Dorne. Ser Keldon reported that the port of Lemonwood had been expanded and trade ships now flowed freely from Oldtown and elsewhere, Lord Tarly reported that the villages along the Greenblood had been rebuilt and the people fed from the surplus supplies of the Crown’s army.
“Its beginning to make a difference mi lord,” the youth said with a smile. Alexander smiled back, it was much better repairing things then destroying them.
“What about Sunspear?” Alexander said with interest. The question brought only the cold sound of silence. “Have we made any progress with Sunspear?” Alexander asked again.
Ser Keldon, spoke next, “Mi lord. . . Irwyn” Keldon said trying to buy time, “Sunspear has become a bit of a problem.”
“Problem, what kind of problem?” Alexander asked slightly annoyed, the Crown had specified an interest to rebuild the city despite Alexander’s better judgment.
“Well mi lord it seems that Outlaws have taken up residence in the ashes and have become a detriment to rebuilding efforts,” Ser Keldon noted.
“I thought there was nothing left?” Alexander said.
“Well it appears that the damage was not as extensive as we believed. Early reports indicate that the Dornish guerillas left in the city by the Martells’ built some tunnel networks and some of them were able to escape the fire. The ones that survived are running the remains of the city pretty effectively. We lost almost fifty men sent in to scout the area for salvageable materials, there are also reports from the garrison of Lemonwood of these outlaws probing along the river,” Ser Keldon added.
Alexander nodded solemnly, “Damn it! Just as I feared before,” Alexander said “Fucking bad luck,” Alexander yelled uttering a rare obscenity. “I tried to avoid this battle by burning the city but it appears I only delayed it.”
“We could send in some forces and try to clear the area mi lord,” Ser Keldon offered.
“We can’t send soldiers in to fight a street battle, Keldon even our veterans have no experience in fighting a battle in the streets against guerillas. I am not even sure the Goldcloaks would be up for the task
“How many are left?” Alexander asked.
“Maybe 500 at the most mi lord,” Ser Keldon offered and at least 4000 citizens who have returned.
“Well Keldon, do what you must, the King wants Sunspear rebuilt and we will not disappoint,” Alexander stood as a signal that the meeting was adjourned.
Keldon stood and exited his Lord’s Solar. It was a dirty job but someone had to do it.
