Reret sat in his office managing his business. There were a lot of things to do. He had to decide which ship went where, what sort of shipment they would buy and sell. It was a lengthy process and one he went through every other week. The servants, sailors and captains had to be paid. He had to provide money for the supplies on board, repairs for the ships and new equipment. Then he went through his stack of letters, information about merchants meeting merchants, he would have to make it so that some of them didn’t show up. A smiled appeared on his fat lips as he read the next letter.
The next day Reret found himself at his older brother’s estate, on the outskirts of the city. The brother had just died leaving no heirs except maybe a bastard son or daughter, and so Reret found himself at the estate at least a day or two before the daughter would arrive with her wretched mother. By gods he hated them both, though he didn’t like his brother that much either, the bastard had just about thrown him out once he inherited. “Well, who’s the one laughing now brother,” Reret muttered.
“Here is the will you requested,” the representative from the office of Law said. Reret took the will in hand and read through it. He sighed and dappled his forehead with a perfumed cloth. This wouldn’t do, this wouldn’t do at all. He ripped the will in half, and watched in not a small amount of satisfaction that the agent spluttered. Reret snapped his fingers and his bodyguard produced a new version of the Will, a better one in his opinion. Which was all that mattered truth to be told. “It is a shame that my brother amassed so much gambling debt that he had to sell his poor daughter to a Lyseni pleasure house, is it not? Reret woe at the poor girl’s future, such a sweet girl she is. Her mother will weep for days over the lost innocence before taking her life I think,” Reret said faking a sad tone. He knew very well that the representative had a huge gambling debt, he smirked as the agent’s eyes widened before he nodded dumbfounded. Too bad the agent would be found drinking himself to death a few days from now, he was rather amusing. “Oh, look the Lyseni debtor has come already; they must fly on wings of ecstasy I think. I must go to the solar and look over my brother’s business letters. Good luck on consoling the poor mother, I hear that she is quite loose”. The agent nodded still but a small smile was appearing on this face. Reret had stationed more of his guards outside the estate in case the representative would try to foul up his plans.
Reret entered the solar and looked upon the painting of the family. Three brothers they were in all and now only one remained, one dead of an mysterious illness, the same that had gotten his father. Curiously enough his brother had spared him, no doubt a misplaced sense of pity. “Are you proud now father?” Reret asked, silence was the only answer.
