His nose twitched as the smell of food wafted down into his hole. He was very hungry, but he could feel the big people shaking the ground with every step, so he remained hidden. He chewed on some little pieces of food he had stored from earlier, but it wasn’t enough, he would need to venture out soon.
When the shaking finally stopped, and the loud voices of the big people went away, he tentatively poked his head out of his hole, and looked around. Near to his hole, and piece of food had fallen from where the big people ate. He was filled with joy as he ran over to the food, and his large front teeth began biting into it and chewing it, while his front feet grappled onto it. He ate happily until he heard the softest of noises, which made him freeze instantly. His ears focused intently, to see if he could hear anything further.
He decided to pull the food back to his hole. He held onto it with his front feet and started moving backwards slowly, his nose sniffing for the smell of a predator. He caught the scent just then, but it was too late.
The cat pounced onto his position, and he only barely had enough time to drop his food and scurry out of the way before it landed. But now the cat was in between him and his hole, and he had to move fast, his four feet pushing him forwards as quickly as he could. The cat was following him now, he knew he had to avoid corners, avoid corners, being cornered would be bad. He slid underneath a barrier, and kept on running, though confident that the cat hadn’t been small enough to fit underneath as well. He ran and ran until he squeezed into a new small safe place.
He didn’t know where he was anymore, but he was free of the cat, and that was all that mattered. He could now hear a rumbling noise coming from outside his hiding place. It was a familiar noise, the big people made it when they were sleeping, but for some reason he felt strangely attracted to the noise. He crept out his hiding place, and moved forward very slowly. He saw a big person stretched out flat on its back. He didn’t know why he was getting so close to one, but he couldn’t help himself, he moved out further and further, crawling slowly along on top of the big person, until he was nearly at the place where the rumbling noise came from...
Qarl the Shark opened his eyes slowly at first as he tried to get over the vividness of his dream. But he suddenly noticed a heavy weight on his chest. His eyes started to adjust to the darkness and he could see the outline of a large fat rat, sitting on him. Qarl moved to grab it, but it darted off him before he could. Qarl jumped from the bed just in time to see the rat squeeze under the door and go out into the tavern he was staying at. Qarl ripped open the door and raced after the rat, he saw it sitting tentatively atop a staircase, and he lunged to catch it... but his hands found nothing as he crashed into the floor and the rat scurried down the stairs. Qarl jumped down after it, taking the steps four at a time. The rat made its way through the throng of people in the tavern and squeezed out under another door out into the night.
Qarl followed it out into the city streets of King’s Landing. He could see it speeding down a road, and he took off as fast as he could after it, determined not to lose the rat. It skidded around a corner and headed down a dark alleyway. Qarl continued to chase after it, and smilled in triumph as the alleyway ended in a dead end. The rat hesitated for a second and where it would go next, but that was enough for Qarl. He lunged at it again, and this time he caught the furry creature securely between his hands.
He lifted the thing up, and surprisingly it didn’t bite him or scratch him, it’s eyes met Qarl’s and the two just looked at one another.
“What just happened?” Qarl asked the rat.
