Reret was about to leave the port for the day. He had again profited at selling rat poison and many ships that sailed the narrow sea and further east was now rat free. He would really have to thank Brandon sometime, well Brandon would have to thank him to as he was the one doing the job. Reret sighed, “no thanking will be needed then,” he thought. What Brandon didn’t know was that he had earned far more at selling rat poison than what he told … Well indirectly at least. He had now more ships than what he had a few months ago, ten ships in all.
Reret heard some men talking about the lack of provisions, they looked like they were from Quarth and they used a different port than the one he had a shop at. “Good day, merchant. Do you know where we could get some cheap provisions, we don’t have much space in our cargo so it will have to be easy to store,” the pale Quartheen said clearly the leader of the group.
“Ah, then look no further good men, for you have indeed been lucky enough to stumble upon Reret’s modest shop. Reret almost bounces with the prospect of further profit, this day have brought naught but a paltry sum as most merchants have left and won’t return for a few days to get some more of the most excellent wares,” Reret did bounce at this. “See here a demonstration of the power powder. Pour it into water like this see, and stir out around it needs to be mixed with the water and not lump down in the bottom. Now Reret will demonstrate with a rat. See how the rat is enlivened by just drinking some of the water. See how it bounces down the street, so enlivened that it does not notice the huge wagon that is about to run it offer. Ah poor rat, Reret shall need to find another one for demonstrations”.
The men seemed happy enough with the demonstration and bought four crates of the powder. Reret waved them farewell and sent two of his men to help them carry the crates. After Brandon had told him the recipe of the rat poison, Reret had become intrigued in how it worked. When the powder was in its concentrated form the rat’s heart beat faster and faster noticeably that the rat had bleed much more from a minor wound that Reret had given it. When eating too much of the powder the rat’s heart would burst and fall dead. But if only given small portions or a watered version the rats would be enlivened, though ultimately weakened due to lack of food. The sailors would also feel enlivened and mayhap forget to eat, thus getting weaker.
“Prepare your crew to sail after the ship, captain,” Reret said to a scarred man dressed in black that had appeared when the Quartheen had left. The Sealord didn’t care about his business as long as he didn’t target Braavosi ship and those he had dealings with, he even got some of the profit due to taxes. One week later the Quartheen ship had returned with a different crew, different sails and a painted hull. Reret thought for a bit and decided that he really should thank Brandon for this.
Result:
Reret increase poison to apprentice
Reret increase persuasion to expert
More ships are included in Reret’s trading fleet.
