"Ah," Ser Allain nodded sagely. "Aye, I know how that is. I am a mere hedge knight, the son of a hedge knight, and my grandfather fought under a Targaryen king long ago. We've always been of Blackgrove, though. It's a village along the Mander, with a nice new sept these days, and good fishing by the river."
As he ate, Ser Allain proceeded to fill Ser Devon in with news from other parts of the country. "The Tyrell soldiers are coming home from war," he said. "Well, most of them anyway, with most of their parts intact. Some of them got rich with all the looting, others weep bitter tears for the comrades they lost, or are hardened to their suffering. I fought at Skyreach, but came home soon after. It was a fierce and terrible war."

Ser Devon nods solemnly. "I have heard tidings both fair and terribly ill from those returning. I still have mixed feelings about having never been called up to aid. My time was largely spent in Casterly Rock training conscripts.

"Count yourself lucky," Ser Allain grunted, drinking his wine. "It was no great glory, but a bloodbath under a hot, cruel Dornish sun that cooked you in your armor."

Ser Devon shook his head, taking a drink as well. "I've heard the rumors, of those who died not of wounds, but of the heat. Just fell in the lines and died. How terrifying... and all this blood spilled over one fool who refused to bend the knee."

"That princess would have served her people better to surrender to Lord Commander Benfry," Ser Allain said. "It was massacre after massacre, as if we were wiping out the Dornish race. Some of those dark devils were so savage that I took pleasure in killing them, but I saw the smallfolk butchered as well, and women taken by force against the sands. The Dornish will not thank Princess Tristeza for inviting such a bloodbath to their homes."

"I certainly hope not. In fact I hope they curse her name and beg for the King's peace. Otherwise this could all happen again. No one wants that."

"They must be begging for the King's Peace indeed. Last I heard, the sand lords and ladies were swearing allegiance to little Rickon. Have you ever seen our boy king? He is quite the solemn little man."

"Actually, no. I've never met the young King. My only dealings with King's Landing at all have been with the regent, Ser Benfry. He has given way for my son to be made legitimate, and carry my name."
At this, Dougal nods, and pushes forth an empty plate. "Shall I retire, father?"
"Very well, and don't forget, tomorrow we train."

"Sleep well, young Dougal," Ser Allain said with a kind smile. He turned back to Devon. "I saw the King once when I was in King's Landing, at a feast for Maiden's Day. Such a serious, proper little thing, with such grave eyes. You would think he was a boy only in body, but weighed down by the burdens of a man. He said his speech very earnestly."

"Then he may very well be a just and righteous king. Pray that he survives and lives long. A fair and proper king is just what all the kingdoms need to hope to overcome this age of war and deceit."

"Perhaps," Ser Allain smiled. "And what of you, ser? Do you plan to adventure abroad any time soon? A family is all well and good, but a man yearns to see far places and learn new things, I think."

Ser Devon laughed. "Well, it won't be long before I have to take the boy to the Great Sept. So I'll at least see King's Landing again... it's been years. I used to travel quite a bit in my younger days, mostly to tournaments. I've been to Oldtown, Winterfell, Riverrun, and just about anywhere you can find good ale and a good fight. Lately, though, the kids demand too much of my attention for me to spend much time away."

"Ah yes, they are yet at tender ages, I see," Ser Allain said. "And your lady would be loathe to part with you. It is a rare and fortunate thing, to have a strong keep and a family."

"The girls are young, that's true, but I'm not sure about tender... they're crafty as foxes. Definitely got that from their mother. Dougal, on the other hand, seems to take after the Lannister blood even more than I. He turns heads at court, and can take up a sword with the best of them. Just last week he split my practice blade in twain. It won't be long now before I'll have him knighted."

"Is that so?" Ser Allain said with interest. "He sounds a fine lad."
