Cameron woke in a hot sweat, his recurring dream faded out and he fell back into his bed. He stared at the cracked ceiling of his tiny room and wondered how long it had been painted before it started to chip.
Cameron fell asleep and woke up what seemed like a few seconds later, but what was in actuality several hours. Dressing himself from the small collection of clothes he had in a single broken drawer, he went down the hallway where he found his master and his master's family eating breakfast. Cameron greeted them in a friendly tone and started his day with the usual rituals, grabbing a small slice of bread, hard cheese and finding a place on the staircase to eat his food.
The cheese was hard but enjoyable, and he couldn't help but think of cheese he had once had when his parents worked in the Reach. Ever since he left them to make his own name he had not enjoyed the same sort of pleasures-- there were few baths to be had here, and the meals were modest at best. The company was often pleasurable though, and Cameron often played with the infant daughter of his master when not working.
The shop itself was a two story building -just- out of Flea Bottom, and a wooden sign painted with a needle and black thread hung above the opening. The shop's name, Needle and Thread, was proudly painted in elegant script above the needle. Cameron had been working as an apprentice to the master tailor, Jordon, for some time, and his skills and duties were improved and expanded on a daily basis. His duties now included many of his master's old jobs, and he began to take on some of his master's more prominent clients as he displayed his skill.
Last week he had received a commission for a long fine blue cloak embroidered with a black book. Cameron was excited for this commission because the man who ordered it was a nobleman, and this was Cameron's first real encounter with a nobleman.
As Cameron sat working in the shop alone one night making his finishing touches to the cloak when he heard a crash. Two men broke their way through the flimsy wooden door of the shop. Cameron was worried initially because he was unarmed, but remembered that his master's old longsword lay in a chest behind him. Silently turning from his work Cameron found the sword and drew the blade from its sheath. Creeping barefoot across the cold floor he came across the robbers who sat hunched over a chest of drawers, searching for anything that looked like it could be pawned.
Cameron made no warning as he lunged across the floor at the two men who were startled to see that someone had actually come to scare them off. The men drew crude longswords and pointed them at Cameron as he fell upon them. As he got closer he realized that they were not too much older than himself. Proving his worth with the sword he parried every consecutive blow they made, and made a few glancing blows upon the two men before scoring a deeper cut on the more experienced sword of the two. The men immediately fell back from him and Cameron chased them from the shop. When they were no longer to be seen he reported the crime to the goldcloaks who subsequently posted more men in his neighborhood watch.
