Ser Grant Connington at Sandstone
As the army marched on Sandstone, Ser Grant fell into the same routine as before. He led scouting missions in the place of Lord Caffern but never saw any hint of the Dornish. There were no ambushes along the road, perhaps because the Dornish host was absent, but Grant always felt like the very land was watching him. The walls of Sandstone rose up before the host and Lord Tyrell ordered the simple storming of the castle, as if he cared naught about anyone who died in battle. Men threw themselves at the wall and were burned and shot, even though the simple numbers meant that the Dornish would be overwhelmed eventually.
Ser Grant had too few troops to try to dictate overall command to men older and more experienced than himself, so he simply followed Lord Breck’s commands and made notes in his mind on the flaws in the battle plans of the current commanders, for reference later when planning his own battle strategies. When they had marched south towards teh castle, he had noticed that the south side had far greater space between the towers, and would make a much easier assault. He had brought the information to Lord Tyrell, who had told him gruffly that tehre was no time to march all the way around to the south side of the castle. Lord Lefford had been impossible to reach; he was surrounded by western retainers who would not let any non-westermen near him.
By the time they reached teh castle, he found himself again in the group of men behind the ram that made its way through fire arrows to the north gate. There were a mere fraction of the Dornishmen here than those who had been at Yronwood when he took the castle there, but they inflicted casualties on the attacking army regardless. When the ram broke through the gate, Ser Grant was among the first men to storm through, hacking in with his sword along with Lord Breck and his brother Liam. All three stormlanders fought side-by-side, cutting a bloody swathe through the Dornishmen guarding the castle's gate. Everyone had orders to spare those who yielded, though that day at Sandstone every Dornishman there fought to his death. After the castle was taken, Lord Tyrell ordered it set aflame, and Ser Grant could see the burning castle in the distance behind him.
The 2,000 Stormlanders who had survived the march from Kingsgrave south had been turned east by Lord Breck, who intended to march to Hellholt to meet the main army of the crown.
