The fire man in Barrowton stood upon a crate. Raising his hands, he cried, “Attend the words of R’hllor…”
------------------------------------------------------
“For he speaks to us not as a general commands his troops, but as a father chides his children… not to leave our house unguarded, to treat our neighbors wisely, and to protect our families always. These are not the words of priests or teachers, but the words of parents… of mothers and fathers who desire a better future for their children.”
Highton’s residents gathered very slowly, only after they realized this one was harmless…
------------------------------------------------------
A scrawny young man with blue eyes and a broken nose, hardly a threat.
“Children are the Seven’s greatest blessing. The Father and Mother watch after them… the Smith and Warrior teach them skills to look after themselves… the Maiden and Crone to love and grow old with… and finally the Stranger to guide us beyond… The Stranger is not to be feared, for in death, the fire in us which burns, lights outwards to reveal his face…”
-------------------------------------------------------
“A kind face. A gentle face. A face to soothe us after a life of suffering and turmoil. The Lord of Light and his seven aspects did not design this world to torture the innocent, but to nurse them so that they might nurse themselves. But like spoiled children, we have corrupted our purpose. We have formed fiefs and chained our brothers, enslaved our sisters. We have thrown away all that was meant to be! We have spit on the gods and this hunger is our reward!”
A young woman jumped when the fat priest began yelling.
----------------------------------------------------------
“The old gods are NOT silent because that is our way… they are silent because we no longer listen! Because the gods weep and the heavens moan to see us like this! We are not the slaves of powerful men… we are their bitches! We have bent ourselves over and been fucked so many times because we refuse to take control of our own fate! But this not how it need be!”
Men would almost laugh if the boy did not have tears in his eyes and many knew exactly what he meant.
-------------------------------------------------------
“Pylos the Apostate is not a petty tyrant. He gives no orders, declares no kingdoms. He desires the world returned to its proper place, where men are wiling to fight for what they believe in. Family, freedom, peace… he desires the world we see when we close our eyes in the Godswood… peaceful, gentle, natural.”
Some of the male had a different feeling altogether as they watched the woman speak, her chest heaving with excitement at R’hllor’s promises. Still, the words slowly creeped in.
--------------------------------------------
“Fire is not a warrior’s weapon… it is a tool of enlightenment to show the way while removing those who would block the path of enlightenment. We are not savages or heathens… we are simply willing to fight for what is ours, though we may be few and despised. We are the Fiery Faith. When I first saw Pylos and saw his acts, I was but a thief…”
--------------------------------------------
“A potter…”
----------------------------------------------
“A beggar…”
------------------------------------------------
“A clark…”
------------------------------------------------
“An orphan…”
-------------------------------------------------
“A seamstress…”
--------------------------------------------------
“But now I finally have a reason to live beyond my own survival. I live for others. The Lord of Light is not my master… he is my guide. The Apostate did not command me… my heart did. And that is why I am here… so that you may listen.”
