Ser Grant rode at the head of the column with his brother, while Lords Caffern rode in the middle and Dondarrion commanded the rear guard. They had received a request to aid the Western armies in attacking Kingsgrave in the Prince’s Pass, however as the Stormland host reached the mouth of the Pass, they came upon and passed Skyreach which the scouts reported was still defended by the Dornish snakes, however further north the Stormlanders walked into an ambush. They had sent out the garrison and set an ambush in the Pass. Ser Grant ordered the charge towards the Dornish and then received word that the rearguard of the column was being attacked by more of the snakes. Both ambush parties attacked before Ser Grant could draw his armies up into a line, and so the columns began to crumble under the assault. Ser Grant wheeled his horse, bellowing orders and calling out commands. His brother Liam remained at his side, lightly making fun of his brother’s increasing hoarseness.
A wedge of Dornishmen punched through the mass of men and the Connington brothers found themselves in the midst of bloody carnage. Ser Liam, as ever, moved gracefully about the field cutting down the tanned and freckled soldiers of Dorne. Ser Grant was knocked from his horse, but slew the man who had done it, and then fought on foot with his brother. The two moved about the field and rallied men to them, and soon the Stormland columns had formed into a solid wall of men, three lines deep. A messenger came up to him and said that Lord Dondarion had repulsed the attack from the rear and that the Dornish were retreating. As much as it pained him to lose so many men, Ser Grant ordered a push and his men shoved through the Dornishmen, and the Stormland host began to move up towards Kingsgrave. Thy had lost almost half their strength, but had survived an ambush while outnumbered and bloodied the Dornish as well. The deaths of so many men weighed heavily on Grant’s shoulders; he had long since given up his horses for the transportation of the wounded. He wondered, not for the first time, if this war would be worth the cost.
