The cloaked man shook his head to the merchant. “No, not personal gain. This is for the Riverlands, to make it great.” The cloaked man looked around, and lowered his voice.
“With the Blackwoods removed from power, the Tullys will be the new Lord Paramounts now. However, they have been out of power for hundreds of years. Lord Arthur is little known and probably not overtly liked by the smallfolk, and the Riverlands cannot risk dissent.”
The merchant thought for a while, taking a drink of ale. He had rich silks and velvets on, and much jewelry. He had all the looks befitting a rich and powerful merchant such as himself, being a commander or a vast amount of wagons trains and lower merchants.
“Yes, it makes much sense. The people don’t know what to think of their new rulers, who they know nothing about.” The cloaked man nodded.
“Yes, unknown rulers that have risen up from the dirt. They did not even lead a castle, let alone a kingdom. With your help, I will be able to know what the people will think. I plan on helping Lord Tully lead, having vast amounts of experience at my disposal.” The merchant nodded once again, drinking more ale.
“Besides helping my Kingdom, what else will I receive in return?” He asked, eyeing the hooded man greedily. The cloaked man smiled slightly.
“Of course, I have thought it over. You will be given stronger trade power in Stone Hedge, along with some gold for you favor. But above all, you will be helping the Riverlands.” He said, every bit believing in the last part.
“I will give each of my caravan leaders their orders, to have their men listen for any and all rumors circulating. They will also be ordered to inquire on any interesting events, and to pass on any knowledge that need be passed on. My men can be trusted, they’re all honorable working Riverlanders.” The merchant stated. The man in the hood nodded.
“Good, good. I am happy to hear it. I want to know of all the smallfolk’s feelings and rumors on major matters, and of any events.” He paused before continuing.
“Your men will be working for a great cause, noble and honored by the gods.”
“Yes, of course M’Lord. I am at your service, Lord Blackwood.”
The two men rose and shook hands in the crowded inn, both confident the loud ruckus around them hid their conversation. The merchant retired to his lavish room upstairs, with the cloaked man walked out, saddled his horse, and left the inn.
