Patrek walked around the Red Keep with charcoal and sheets of paper. He marked every hallway, door, how big the rooms were, if they had doors to another room, he even went down to the room dragon skulls, it would be an invaluable escape route during an attack and in the end he ended up facing the courtyard. In the room with the dragon skulls he had placed a sack of clothes, for disguises which one could carry through the sewer and change before they emerged.
As he stood in the courtyard he observed the men patrolling the walls and the guards standing at duty near the gatehouse. He envisioned an attack just then. Enemies clambered over the walls and some broke through the portcullis. A horn sounded and then they were met with organized crossbow fire, one from the main entrance to the keep, one from the stables and from the windows in the Keep. Then the doors were barred, other entrances would be blockaded at once when the horn was sounded.
In the hallways the King’s Men would rally at designated places in the hallways, while the King was escorted down to the chamber with the dragon skulls. As the enemy breaks through the main and stable doors they would be met with crossbow fire yet again. As the dead hinders the progress of those behind, not to mention that at close range the bolts could go through one more than one person. The King’s Men would then flee to either side of the door and meet more of their company beyond more barricades though not so high that they would have trouble climbing over it. If they were to slow they were to hold of the enemies with swords. In both situations they would have a codeword so that the other guards would know the situation.
As the enemy turned in the next hallway they would yet again be met with crossbow fire, and from that point on the King’s Men would fight strategically. If the enemy were being held up in some of the smaller hallways the backmost guards would double back through some doors and take them in the rear. If the enemies were too many they would run through some hallways that they knew and end up at the dragon skulls and into the city were they would hide and await further orders.
Patrek smiled it seemed like a good plan during a event like the coup, he would have to speak to Lord Benfry.
