Patrek was walking his rounds in the Red Keep as it neared dusk, being a second in command did nothing to stop his duties. His muscles were aching from wearing the armour and carrying the longaxe. It didn’t help that he had his crossbow hanging over his back, ready to shoot if he came across several intruders .A good soak later would be very welcome. He walked past the King’s chambers. There were two guards positioned outside, Vardis Pryor and another one about Vardis own age. He had walked this hallway four times this evening and every time the younger one seemed more and more restless as if not finding quite the right position to stand in. The Vardis seemed more comfortable, and looked seemingly asleep though he wasn’t of course or else he would have wakened the man up already.
The young man didn’t quite catch this and out of boredom he decided to “wake” Vardis up with a blow to the shoulder. Just as he was about to punch, Patrek said “I wouldn’t do that if I were you”. The young man startled and almost dropped his spear, while Pryor sighed showing the young man that he was awake. “If you are bored then talk to each other, you don’t have to be silent unless you’re in a meeting”. Vardis scoffed and acted older than he was, maybe he was entitled to it after all he’s been through. “Like this youth have anything interesting to say”. Patrek grunted in approval. “That reminds me, the King requested a lemonpie and since you are the first one to come by in a while it falls upon you to inform the kitchen. Unless you wish to take my place standing guard that is.” Patrek grimaced, nodded and walked on.
He was at the kitchens after putting away his gear at the barracks. The kitchen girl had been slightly put out as there were no lemonpies left from earlier this day and had to begin making one at once. Patrek noted that the ingredients in the kitchen weren’t secured “Anyone can tamper with them,” he thought and grunted. He would have to take that up with Ser Danwell.
The pie was done and he was about to leave with it when he halted. He scratched his head and said “I forgot that the King only wanted half a pie, so we might take a bit for ourselves,” he smiled sincerely to the girl. He sliced a piece for the girl which she took with gratitude and ate it eagerly. “Not a poisoner then,” he thought. “And the pie is not poisoned either” he noted as the girl didn’t drop dead. “Aren’t you gonna take a bit, ser,” she asked. “I will take a piece on the way to the king; it wouldn’t do for him to go hungry. Fare well, young lady,” he said and the girl giggled as he made his way to the King.
Outside the chambers he gave each of the guards the rest of the second half of the pie. They looked at him questionable. “I’ll take the blame if he complains,” Patrek said “just don’t take too long eating it”. “Here boy I’m not to found of lemon pies,” Vardis said and gave it to the young King’s Man who ate it eagerly.
He walked inside the chambers and set the plate on a table. “The pie is still warm so you should wait a few minutes before eating it, your Grace”. “Why is it only half a pie?” the small King asked. “Some of the pie was burnt, my King, and so the chef had to remove it. If you want I can tell you a story while you wait, if it pleases your Grace”. The king nodded eagerly and so Patrek told him the story of Robert Baratheon’s rebellion against the Mad King.
After some time and he still hadn’t heard noise of dropping spear or armour he said “the pie is cold enough to eat now, my King” and walked out of the door. “Telling the King bedtime stories now eh?” Pryor said obviously hearing the parts were Patrek had acted and the small King was laughing. “We are at the King’s command after all, you would do good to learn that,” he said rolling his shoulders “all I need now is a good soak”.
