Patrek put the book aside. He had read it halfway through and it had brought up a great many issues on fighting inside cities and keeps. The great many differences of fighting on a field and fighting in a city were explored. If a man on the wall is worth ten under him, a man defending a city could be worth fifteen in the right conditions. Blockading the major streets forcing men to climb then, made easy targets for the crossbowmen and archers hiding behind windows. Armies would have to use smaller paths where the numbers didn’t matter. And the options for fighting inside the halls were staggering. “If I only had read this book before the coup,” he thought.
He went down to the training yard and to practice with his crossbow. He spotted a King’s Man working with his crossbow too. “How is it faring?” he asked. “It’s getting better Ser. I hit the target more often than not now,” the King’s Man replied not taking his eyes of the target. Patrek nodded as he observed how the man used the crossbow. The man shot and hit the target three hands away from dead centre.
“You flinch slightly when you fire,” Brandon said. “You should also try to fire when you breathe out”. The King’s Man nodded, fired again and smiled when he hit closer to the middle. Patrek grunted his approval. “You should also always cock you crossbow the same way every time. Mark your string while it rests on both sides of the stock”. Patrek then showed the man how he did it and smiled inwardly as the man’s eyes grew wide when he hit dead centre. “Keep practicing and you will become a very valuable advantage,” Patrek encouraged. Patrek then walked down to the city, he had some smiths to talk to.
