For the seventh time she had to hide. This time it was a small group of riders that were heading in her direction. She quickly jumped into a bush and waited for the men ro tide past. She stayed until the noises of their horses subsided and climbed out of the green. It had not taken Finny long to gather her things the morning Bear-rick had left and she had managed to see him leave the city. He and his men had been on horse so by the time she snuck through the gate they had been gone, but she could clearly see the hoof marks on the road. She had come across a few forks in the road but she had always continued straight ahead and the last time she had to hide she had even heard someone talk about a queer looking fellow, that they had met a few days back, 'with pale skin and purple eyes'. It had to have been Bear-rick, which made Finny happy that she was still on the same road he had taken. She had never wanted him to leave, and when he did Finny knew she had to follow him. She had run home quickly, taken some food, a cloak and a blanket and had set off after him. Getting through the gate hadn't been a problem either. Finny was good at sneaking past people and hiding from them, and now that she had had to avoid even more people she thought of herself as a master of hiding. Even Bear-rick would be proud of her, she thought... if she ever saw him again to
till him of it.
A while later Finny heard a noise. It was a rustling and a thundering and suddenly a boy was standing in front of her. He was about fifteen, with greasy black hair and a horrible scar on his face. In one hand he held a dagger, in the other a stick and his mouth formed a horrible smile. "Well, hello there little one." Finia slowly shoved her hand into her pocket and grabbed her dagger. "You're not very scary." she said to the boy. He seemed to take it as an insult and pointed at her with his stick. "Once I clobber you with this you will. Been following you for a while now. Was hoping you were a bit older but that don't matter really." As he reached for her,
Finny pulled the dagger out and jammed it into the boys' hand. He screamed and jumped backwards and Finia turned to run, but she felt something grab her shoulder and so she whirled around, flailing her arms in front of her. Her hand somehow caught the boy in the head and he stumbled sideways.
For a moment it looked like he would keep his balance but then he tripped and fell to the floor. Finny didn't see how it happened, but when she looked at him he was dead. Somehow he had cracked his head on a rock and now his lifeblood was flowing out in streams.
She was close to tears, but Finny knew Bear-rick would not want her to cry, so she grabbed her dagger, wiped off the blood and made her way down the road. She ran until she was far away from
the dead boy.
