Felryn Harlaw stood at the bow of his ship, his arms outstretched beside him, his hair blowing backwards behind him as he let out a mighty roar in the direction of Seagard and the ships protecting it. He laughed at their defences, and yelled mockeries of Riverlanders, spurring his men on towards their destination.
Qarl the Shark leaned against the mast and watched Felryn, the man seemed half a beast at times, as wild as the ocean he loved, if he truely loved anything at all. And like the ocean he could be calm as well, deceptively so, leading sailors far away from land only to catch them in a horrid storm. Qarl’s hand went to the hilt of Red Rain, the sword felt good in his hands, as if it was meant there. When he looked out at Seagard and its defenders, the salty smell of the sea was momentarily replaced with the metallic smell of blood. A large, toothy grin spread across his face.
Qarl saw Victarion Harlaw, the new captain of Felryn’s guard, pacing up and down the side of the ship. For an Ironborn, he did not seem as capable on a deck as one would expect, but Qarl had seen him train in the yard with a sword in hand, and he had never seen anyone so skilled, not even his own father.
The Mallister eagle came into view above the castle and the ships sent out to protecting her. They numbered just over a score, Felryn could see. Without turning back he pointed a finger into the air and span his arm around, and the drum masters took their cue and sped up the beat to ramming speed. As one the entire fleet followed the Iron Price and lurched forward. The Riverlander ships were coming out to meet them now. Felryn moved down from the bow, and held his ship steady with its line, as the faces of the enemies came into view, young men, old men, scared men, determined men, they would all fall before him. He let out one final roar as the two fleets smashed into each other with an ear shattering crash of splitting timber. Victarion Harlaw lost his footing in the first crash, but jumped back up like a panther, his sword unsheathed he dared anyone to laugh.
They came up beside a Mallister boat, and Felryn raised his sword in the air and lowered it pointing at the enemy ship, “drown them all!” he yelled, and jumped onto their ship. Alone and unsupported for a moment, he spun around slicing down any who dared to try him, and soon the other Ironborn were flooding over the edge join him. Qarl was there his sword flashing in his hand, cutting through Riverlanders like they weren’t even there.
The sea battle was over nearly before it was begun, with the vast majority of Ironborn force not even having a chance at combat, but there was plenty left for them to do, Qarl mused as he looked at the walls of Seagard. The ships came to land at shore under a hail of arrows and catapulted rocks. Qarl, Felryn and Victarion moved quickly, as Meevis Humble began to shout out orders amongst the men. Ladders and ropes and rams were unloaded from the ships, and the attack moved forward against the walls.
The bravest and truest of the Ironborn began pressing ladders against the walls and making their climb up. Qarl merely tied a rope around his waist, and took a running jump at the wall. His fingers pushed into the tiniest crevices in the smooth wall, and he pulled himself upwards. One arm after the other, one foot after the other, he climbed up amid a downpour of arrows and stones. On a ladder beside him, Qarl was shocked to see the grizzly, bearded Victarion climbing up the walls. Despite using only his hands and feet, Qarl was keeping up the pace with the other large man, and they pulled themselves over the top of the wall at the same time.
Surrounded on all sides, the two of them stood back to back, their swords flashing in the sun, cutting down man after man. Qarl could hear Victarion laughing wildly behind him, revelling in the bloodshed. At the same time he heard a loud crash, as the ram brought the gates of Seagard shattering down, and the hordes of the Ironborn flooded into the castle.
