Lord Breck Dondarrion found his chambers in the Red Keep to be quite enjoyable. He had never so directly profited from his mother's royal birth as he did now, as he sat reading through several ancient tomes of history. His mother's steward, a middle aged man of modest birth had brought him a crate of books full of elegant script and bright illustrations depicting his family's past.
He carefully skimmed through the pages of these books while browsing through papers he had to respond to from Blackhaven. As he neared his 16th name-day his duties as Lord of Blackhaven were gradually becoming the full powers of an adult ruler. Yesterday he had scowered a map looking for the best places for roadways into and out of Blackhaven, and today he was concerned with housing developments within the city walls. He had decided to with a few of his stewards when deciding to allow more economic support to his citizens. As vague as it sounded, even the idea of more financial backing would hopefully give them something to be happy about. Breck had little trouble living more frugally in his lordship if he meant his people would be even a little more happy and a little less hungry.
He had discovered some more rulership tactics as he researched the three decade reign of one of his ancestors, King Alderon Baratheon the Green. Styled 'the green' by historians for his contributions to Westeros' economy that helped usher in a golden age. After reading of King Alderon, he flipped back through the fragile pages of the book, and read of the tyrannical reign of King Tanyst Baratheon. Tanyst was succeeded by his brother, Felry, and after Felry died it was his son, the famous Edric IV that ruled for nearly three and a half decades.
To read of great and terrible ancestors gave Breck a higher sense of who he was. He was foremost a Dondarrion and the Lord of his house, but he was also a Baratheon, and nothing reminded him more of this than sitting and speaking with his mother.
As he picked up a new book he brushed dust off the hard cover and made out the title. Excitedly he opened the pages and began to read of his Valyrian ancestry...
