Cedric looked out at the dust, and wrapped his arms around his wife. He pulled her tight against his chest and looked out. "I will order the men to poison the wells. Can we stand against that number?"

"Not on an open field," Aranya said, hugging him, then drawing back and looking him in the eye. "But within Deep Den, with food and weapons, we can outlast them. Look outside, Cedric. It is winter. I do not know how well these people can weather the cold, especially with the land stripped bare of food, drinkable water or game. They might survive on the river, but that is why it is important we cut down all the timber that we can. They must not be able to build siege weapons."

Cedric looked her in the eye and nodded, "So you have told me. The men are at work, but there is nothing to do now but prepare to die." He smiled ruefully, and leaned over and kissed her. "Thank you for being with me. I am in love with you."

Aranya's eyes softened, and she kissed him deeply. "I love you too, Cedric Lannister," she said, with a certain controlled ferocity. "But we are not going to die here."

He gently turned her so she was facing the dust down below. Moving behind her, he wrapped his arms around her waist and stared over her shoulder at the marching me. "They out number us almost twenty to one. I have not surrendered dear, and I plan to bring as many of them to hell as I can. But for all my scheming, plotting and planning my fate is not longer in my hands." His lips play at her ear, and he laughed, "For the first time since I started on my path, I need help. And the only one I trust, is in the same kettle as me."

"Cedric, you're looking at the wrong place," Aranya said. She turned his head from the dust cloud being churned up by the approaching army, and instead made him look at the black smoke rising from the woods. The Lannister men and peasants were burning the woods. "That is the sight of trebuchets burning. Without the trees, they will be reduced to nothing but ladders and rams, which will cost them lives."
She turned to put her arms around him. "I agree that we need help, but we already sent Cerenna to Goldentooth. It is a small force there, but who knows? Large armies have fallen before to smaller, better forces."

Cedric leaned in and kissed her deeply. Pulling back slightly he smiled, "It has happened, but our only true hope is is reinforcements from King's Landing. So I need to send the best messenger I have there." His hand moved to his belt buckle, and he began to remove his belt.

Aranya began to unlace him, tossing the belt aside. "Who will you send?" she asked, yanking him closer.

His hands move to her pants and begin to unlace hers, "I need a respected personage. Clearly our best rider, on perhaps the best steed. Agreed?" He let her pants slip to the floor.

Aranya stopped him, trapping his hands with hers. "You fool," she said softly, anger bubbling within her. "Do you think I would leave you here? Do you think I need you to protect me, to be sent off to safety while you stay here? I cannot leave you. I will not."

Cedric laughed and kissed her. Then despite her resistance he began to work at her leather jerkin trying to lift it over her head, "I love you, would I be a man if I tried anything else? And which one of my points do you disagree with. Why are you exempt from a commander's orders?"

"Because you are my husband," she snarled, pushing him away forcefully this time. "And - damn you, Cedric, do you have any regard for my feelings? Selwyn died for me in battle against foreign priests, Felryn died in Braavos, and I will not leave you here to the same fate! You know full well that I am more experienced than any of your soldiers, and that you need to me here when the fighting starts. You can send anyone to King's Landing."

Cedric pushed back, a sneer on his face, "Well maybe I would be better off with out your bad luck. Your presence has not been too helpful to the men in your life. Maybe I want a chance to live." He removed his shirt as he continued, "Now we are going to fuck, which is the only think you are really good for. And then you will leave, and if I am really lucky I will have another legacy to the world in nine months."

Aranya's face was white with anger. "Is that your way of getting me to leave?" she said contemptuously. "Others have tried those tricks on me before. It's not working. Why do you want me gone from here? What are you afraid of, that I'll steal your glory or something stupid like that? Stop being such a foolish boy. I promised you that I would stay out of the main fighting, and I will keep my word."

Cedric shook his head back and forth and then looked at her, "If that pain of surviving your love's death is so great, why do you wish it on me? Fuck glory, I am worried about you." He reached out and attempted to grab her hand.
