Situated amongst the high passes just north of the Goldroad, the Deep Den stands as a silent tribute to the ancient and noble, if somewhat impoverished, House of Lydden. Built atop the highest point for miles around, the vast, scarred walls made of solid black stone loom large and threatening to travelers on the road. Ruling in the great hall of this black stronghold sits the Lord Lydden, as it has been for an unnumbered amount of years.

Richard Cobbs paced back and forth among the battlements at Deep Den, his dark eyes searching the goldroad for any signs of travel. The old castellan, left in charge with the Lydden brothers all gone up north, had been expecting news of war along the western coast for days now. He only had five hundred men with him, but he would gladly take many of those west with him to crush the invading ironborn. They are savages, more beast that human, Cobbs growled silently, stroking his beard, greying with each passing month. The wind blew fiercely against his rugged face, but his searching eyes never left the goldroad. The Deep Den will not fall quietly, whatever the ironborn may think. No, it will never fall, Cobbs vowed.

1,500 men finally return to their homes. Lewys plans to stay for just a week before heading to King's Landing.
He prepares a letter and sends a raven to Bear Island.

The exhausted men reach Deep Den and deliver a letter to the castellan, Ser Richard Cobbs, who is currently running the castle.
Cobbs sends new outriders to the Golden Tooth with the same message. He then ordered five hundred good men in Deep Den's own service to march east towards the capitol and Duskendale.

5,000 men from the Golden Tooth arrived, as well as thousands of others from the Heatherspoon, Swyft, and Brax lands, along with many other men from smaller keeps. Combined with the men from Deep Den, they totaled 15,000 men. Under command of The Golden One, Lord Phillip Lefford, they began to march south, towards Dorne.

Lord Duncan arrives with Ser Cedric's party, and resumes his duties as Ser Cedric's squire. To the horror of the Deep Den stablehands, he leads Cedric and Aranya's horses into the stables himself, rubbing both of the beasts down thoroughly and feeding them some apples. By the time he made his way up into the castle, night had fallen. He stood on the walls for a time, looking to the west and slightly north as if in a trance.

Cedric claims the highest rooms of the keep. He has spent two nights on the top of a tower staring to the west.

Cedric begins to see a mass of brown dust, miles long, off in the distance, headed up the Gold Road towards Deep Den. They will be here soon.

Aranya was looking over a map of the westerlands, riverlands and crownlands, but came over to the window where Cedric was to watch the dust on the horizon. "They are going to outnumber us vastly," she observed. "If we are to go under siege, the best hope for us is to make sure they cannot besiege us effectively. That means we empty the surrounding villages, strip their grainhouses and larders and bring the provisions into the castle, poison their wells, and remove as much of the surrounding timber as possible so that it will be difficult for them to build siege weapons." She stared at the distant army. "We must look to King's Landing for the fastest aid, not the Crag, Crakehall, or Goldentooth - they have too few."
