Alexander answers the summons of the Master of Whisperers. He arrives as quickly as he receives the message.

Francis is seated at his desk, and looks tired.
"Lord Irwyn, I thank you for coming on short notice. I wanted to advise you of some events, and also to get your opinion."

"Of course Lord Varner, please continue."

"As you know, during my disappearance, I was in the Free Cities striking back at the Braavosi who orchestrated the campaign of assassination and rebellion against us. On the with approval of the Lord Hand, I orchestrated an attempt to kill the Sealord of Braavos. Obviously I missed, but that's neither here nor there. Now I learn that as part of their peace plan, The Braavosi demand that I be tried for doing my duty, and they mean to allow it."

"That is impossible, how could they have ever allowed it?" Alex says visibly agitated.

"The squawkings for peace by the inept and foolish have reached a fever pitch and they feel compelled to come to some accord with the Sealord. And that is his price."

"To seek peace with as man as treacherous as the Sea Lord is ridiculous especially at such cost. What do you intend to do? Surely you cannot stand trial?"

"Lord Horas assures me that the outcome will be fixed, and I am putting my faith in him. But If things go wrong, I do not plan to over my neck readily, and if that eventuality comes, I need to know if you are with me."

"Of course Francis, I will not let those sons of sea bitches take you, especially without a fight, what else can I do to aid you?"

"If I sense betrayal, I may seek a trial by combat. If need be I may ask you to champion my cause. This is a last resort, because the Sealord's bravos are skilled fighters not to be underestimated, but you are my only real choice in such a circumstance. Would you accept this duty?"

"Of course, I would do my utmost to protect you. There is a problem, however, if you stand trial and are found innocent, I do not think that will stop the Sea Lord from seeking vengeance."

"No, I do not think so either, which is why this whole exercise is nothing but a futile gesture, a show of weakness and a personal insult. If I am found guilty, I do not plan to stand idly by. I believe the Vale will rally to my cause, and I will need your help in insuring the Far Reach does likewise. Speak to our closest friends, quietly, and insure we have their support. If the Lord Hand is honorable and things go as he hopes, than we need do nothing, but we will be ready."

"I know the Redwynes and Florents will support us, and the Blackbars. Lord Tarly might be a little bit of a problem since he is not one that prefers to make waves, even on important matters. I am not worried that the Lord Hand will betray you but I am concerned about you having to live the rest of your life afraid of your friends because of the Sea Lord's faceless men."

"Well, I'm afraid that is a threat which already exists, quite irrespective of this trial. As you know, the whoreson already made two attempts on my life. By that calculus I still owe him one."

"Yes although I doubt we will have an opportunity to pay him back. From what you've said he lives like a hermit in that palace and never comes out, its a shame the whole thing was not swallowed by the sea."
