Francis leaned forward conspiratorially.
"A general inspection of the body." Francis said, before realizing it was a little insensitive, "of your friend Flowers, gave no indication of time of death. Cause of death was already established, numerous puncture wounds to the torso. Neither the time of death or the victim's last meal gave any indications as to a perpetrator." Francis sipped his wine.
"The only conclusive item was the chest itself, its scroll work indicative of Braavos. Of course many people buy attractive things in Braavos, but, it is an interesting coincidence, that at about the same time, his Highness Prince Andry's mistress, a Braavosi noblewoman, name unknown repeatedly slipped out from under my agents observations. Possibly a coincidence, but possibly not."

Aerie's eyes narrowed dangerously and she leaned forward over the table. "Prince Andry's mistress, you say? You believe these things can possibly be related." It made sense, and Andry would have the motives..."You have still not managed to locate her yet?"

"She is back in Storm's End with his Highness." Francis said. "They both left when Andry resigned the small council over Horas' return. Regrettably who she was meeting with while she was here in King's Landing is lost to us. It is certainly not evidence which would hold up at a trial, but than, trials are not my business."

Storm's End. Aerie grew eager and furious all at once, and she barely managed to keep her expression cool. "Lord Varner, I think we both see what this could mean. The question is, what do you plan to do about it?"

"I intend to gather more information." Francis said quietly. "And share it with those who would use it to affect a positive change." He smiled at her, to indicate she was included in that anonymous group. "In the mean time I would suggest you take seriously the threats to your person. If these people can reach Lord Bettley, they can certainly reach us. So do be careful. If it is Andry, he'll likely be working on contingency plans now that he's lost access to the King and to King's Landing. He may strike at one or all of us to sow discord and delay any response."

Aerie nodded her satisfaction and sat back. "You are wise, Lord Varner. I see you have been taking your own advice well. I do not think I will need quite as many guards, but I will try to have a care. I think this means that we are--what is the term?--working together, somewhat, on this? Prince Andry will not find this as simple a task as he had thought."

"We are in it together." Francis agreed. "You may feel free to share this information with your Lord Husband, and Perhaps the Lord Hand as well if the situation requires it, but I would not go much further out of that circle of trust."

"I will be sensible in selecting those worthy of my trust. You can rest assured your secrets will be safe," she said with a smile.

Francis raised his eyebrow but did not add anything on that subject. "Speaking of Braavos, I understand that the Dornish have just received 50 new ships from the free city, and on very generous terms. Also very coincidental timing that."

Aerie stared at her plate contemplatively. "Just how generous? These coincidences are rather intriguing, I must say."

"The Dornish paid for them, but the price was reasonable, and the Arsenal delivered from its own reserves so that the Dornish Princess did not have to wait for them to be built and assembled. That is awful kind of them I think. Coincidences are only clues to the plot you have not yet uncovered." Francis said, frowning.
"And now, what have you for me? The Lord Piers is walking again, risen from his deathbed none the worse for wear. I know you were always close with the Beetle, surely it came as no surprise to you?"

"That is suspiciously generous," Aerie agreed, rather surprised. Something was certainly brewing, and all that remained was to figure what. "I trust that you will fit the pieces together soon enough, Lord Varner. You have always been an astute man."
Aerie shrugged at his mention of Piers. "It was a surprise to us all. We had thought him on the verge of death, though we relieved to hear of his recovery."

"So than you heard about it in the same announcement as the rest of us. Hmm... Interesting. I wonder how much control the man maintains over his operations, and what else Andry, or whomever it is, as co-opted. Did you see the Lord Regent before he fled Northwards?"

Aerie shook her head. "If only that he did. I have so much to discuss with him, but right now, Piers is trusting no one."

"I see. Unfortunate. I suppose we shall have to do this without him then. Hopefully the Lord Hand can explain the situation adequately. Well, bring me what you pick up, and we shall see what we can piece together." Speaking of which, Francis thought to himself.
"Shall we see to sending your friend home?"
