"I am a true born Greyjoy, unlike you and your gaggle of followers."

"Yes, truly. Because we all know a true Greyjoy forsakes his claim because he realizes he is incompetent. You may have been a true born Greyjoy, but I will always be more of a true Greyjoy."

"The men here have made it clear that they do not wish to see me on the seastone chair but I will see the lowest thrall on it before you singer."

Sparr snarls. "You're both full of seapiss. One is petty. As for the bastard, I can see that you never have been a Greyjoy, by birth, by name or by spirit. You're just full of yourself." Disgusted, Sparr left to stand with his men and watch from the back. He wished he could kill Balor for dying on them.

"And I can see you have never had that spear removed from your ass." Mortimer said. "Well, you all said you would decide after I clobbered through Old Man Ocean, well now I say, let the fight begin. Either that or save your tongues and just vote for me. I'm the saltiest, most rugged son of a bitch out here, and none can prove that I am not, while I can make for much proof that I am."

Saltcliffe looks at Harlaw. The man will have the courage to take up the challenge, Saltcliffe knows, but does he have the strength to win it?
"Enough talk. Fight."

"Your ass wouldn't be so red if you stopped getting so damnably drunk." Mortimer smiled. "Regardless of the winner, I think we will have a fun time getting absolutely smashed tonight in celebration." He cleared his throat. "Speak up, Harlaw."

"We do not choose a King of Salt and Rock based on a fistfight," Bloodkin says. "Though I would like to see one. But better than that would be axes, so this boy could be shorter by a head."

"That's the first sensible thing you have said all night, Codd." Mortimer said. "What say you, man? What do you want out of a leader?"

"I want a captain. A man who knows our ships and our ways. Take a boat, boy, sail the seas a few years. When Harlaw dies, I might choose you," Codd says. "But I'd wager when you lose here, you'll be back on the greenland sucking at some girl's teat instead."

"Your wager and a shiny copper is worth a shiny copper, Codd." Mortimer seized his collar and ripped it. There was a deep-looking scar on his collar bone. "No body wants yours words, but I'll accept your words if they are to vote for me."
"This scar came to me on a ship. The Flaming Tit she was called.I was defending it from an attack by two Braavosi ships. I was speared in the collarbone, but fought on still. Let every man see this and know that I am a capable fighter and seaman."

"The call went up round the other captains once Harral had backed lord Harlaw. Those who had supported Harral reluctantly threw their weight behind Harlaw. It was not an overwhelming majority, but it was a majority. Once the captains supporting Mortimer saw this they grumblingly hailed the new Lord of the Iron Isles.
Lord Harlaw stepped up with Lord Drumm behind him, glowering angrily at everyone. "My thanks to you, my fellow captains. We have spoken bitter angry words here today. But," he stressed "The moot is for open speaking. Once over we are still ironborn. Brother-captains all and we had best not forget that" he said, looking at Harral and Mortimer equally. "I am not a Greyjoy but in Balor's name I will do right by him and hold the Seastone Chair until those who bear his name are worthy to receive it. Balor's trueborn son and daughter shall remain with me under my protection until they come of age. Many of you have mocked Urri the craven" his look became unusually angry and venomous "It is easy to be brave when you are a man grown with a ship of your own and men who follow your command. I wonder how brave you would have been as children, your father murdered, your brother slain and your life in unfriendly hands? He is my grandson and he has the blood of the Kraken in him yet" he looked wearied by this speech and ended by saying "Follow me and I will hold true to our ways. Never again shall we bow and scrape to those who hate and fear us. We are not beggars. We take what we want and we give nothing back!" he roared the last
