"Maester Filomen, I believe we haven't met before. My name is Jared Snow" he inclined his head in greeting. "There is something I need to talk with you about. I tried to express my concerns to the Lord Commander, but he, well did his best to ignore me." Jared felt uncomfortable telling his tale to a man he didn't know, it sounded too absurd to be easily believed by anyone.

"Tell me, my son, it is not easy times and worrying things are abroad."

Jared nodded gravely. "Well, to put it shortly, I've been beyond the Wall with two brothers. They'd accompanied me to take my Oath in the weirwood groove and well, we've been attacked by,.. I'm not sure what it was but, they were no humans though they looked like we do and....they.... The others are dead. There was nothing I could do for them and since the horses panicked I had to leave them were they lay. I tried to tell the Lord Commander what had happened and that someone should go and retrieve their bodies, but he didn't want to admit me."
Jared felt a bit like a boy telling his master that he had hurt his favourite horse or something. But he was a man grown and a brother of the Night's Watch. Something was lurking beyond the Wall, probably going to attack them and something had to be done. He straightened up and looked the Maester in the eye, waiting for his reaction.

The Maester flinched as he heard this then headed for the bookshelves. He spoke into the shelves as he searched. "About 200 years ago, the brothers fought a war against the Others. The Watch was have trouble recruiting, as we have now, but the Others are exactly why this Wall was built." He found three books and laid them down on the table.
"Do you read, my son? We have need to those who know the old lore. Maester Sam proved that."

"I do."
Jared stepped closer to the table to have a look at the books. He was curious to find out more about the creatures he had fought outside.

The books were dusty. The smell of old vellum assailed them as they began looking through the books. "Take a chair and start reading," invited Maester Filomen as he began opening the books. "Aah, Maester Samwell's own journal, very interesting."

Jared pulled a chair to the table, seated himself and randomly flipped open one of the books. "Non Human Creatures Beyond The Wall" by Maester Samwell. He read:
"Wights were creatures killed by the Others. Their bodies are freezing cold and their eyes glow blue. Wights will attack any living creature around them with surprising strength, and with a certain amount of intelligence and memories of their previous life. They feel no pain and will continue to fight regardless of injury. The only way to stop them is by total dismemberment or to set them afire, since they are highly flammable and will be quickly consumed. It is known that corpses brought through the Wall can still reanimate as wights and even have knowledge of their former live."
Next to the page with Maester Samwell's neat script was a ghastly drawing, showing a wight attacking a men–a-horse.

A raven message is brought to Maester Filomen while they were reading. He read it quickly. "One of the Eastmen is now a wight. They've buried him and the two people he has killed. As you found in Samwell's diary, the corpses need to be burned."
He quickly wrote a reply, hoping that it would be soon enough. "We need to talk to the Lord Commander, now! I suggest you become my assistant. As Maester Samwell proved, reading past works is essential."
