Jared hadn't expected Alester to make a retreat. But on the others hand Mudd's reaction wasn't expectable either. The Wall was in dire need of man and if the old Lordling thought he might make the Lords in the South send them men, why not. But that wasn't his matter do decide.
"I believe that I could be of better service to the Night's Watch as well, then shovelling snow and patrolling the wall. You need able men to do some ranging to find out what's happening beyond the wall. And you can hardly deny that something is happening. But first I guess I'll have to say the oath."

"Howdy Muddy, I was told by the First Steward to come to you as they have no idea what to do with me."

Alester felt the anger built up inside of him, but on the outside he looked as calm as ever.
"Yes, I understand that, Lord Commander. I came here to see if there was any way for me to help you. The history, before the little problem that happened a few years ago, tells of a Watch that would any man proud to be a part of, but you've been ignored for too long, so it seems that you're growing angry at us down south. But I've come here to see if I can make a change to that, so if we could talk about exactly what is needed, I'll try my best to persuade those down there to send more help. This is a promise, and like the Lannisters I always pay my debt"

"If you want to help swear the oath. We need men. Good Men, bad men, women disguised as men it does not matter. We need supplies, we need peons to farm our foods, and smiths to craft our weapons. We need tailors to sew our black garments, and we need sailors to guard our shores. We need Soliders to range, Builders to build and Stewards to stew. Can you help me with that Alester?" Mudd did not look back up from his ledger, copying some figures onto a blank parchment.

"Howdy Muddy, I was told by the First Steward to come to you as they have no idea what to do with me." "You arse he said that, he probably said get your arse back on the wall we are short of men." Mudd grumbled, waving in a Steward to take his report. Mudd immediately started writing a new one. "We need to clear a path through the snow."

"You can go with the workcrew shoveling to Eastwatch." Mudd replied.

Alester had stood there quiet as Jared and the Lord Commander settled the business of Jared taking the oath. He was thinking what to answer the Lord Commander.
"Yes, I'll do what I can, but for me too do that, I need you to lie for me"

Mudd looked up from his work with a hard frown, "Lie for you?"

"Yes, tell a little innocent lie. I need Westeros to think I've taken the black and become a Wandering Crow"

"You may take the black. And then they would think that."

Maester Filomen and Jared stood before the Lord Commander. "Ser," said Filomen. "Wights, walking corpses, which were mentioned by Maester Samwell and others, are back. Jared here saw one and one of the men at Eastwatch became a wight as well."

"That's right. Me and two brothers were attacked by two of them. The wights are dead as are my brothers, Dall and Luther. I had to leave them out there not knowing what to do. But I fear that they are walking again. We should warn the men, before they mistake them for their brothers and let them trough the gate."
