"Fine," Aranya said coldly. The man was deranged and in any other situation, she would have laughed. "Then answer our questions. Where are the commanders of the Shadow Tower and Eastwatch-by-the-Sea?" She spoke slowly and clearly, as if speaking to a demented monkey on a stick. "Do you have reports on Wendwater's last position and that of the wildling tribes?"

I assumed that the maester had to go outside in order to send the raven.

Clenching his hands into fists, Perrin leaned forward on the desk. He took several deep breaths. "What exaclty are you offering from the King?"

"I asked him to bring reinforcements," Aranya said. "And you still haven't answered my questions." Her eyes glinted dangerously.

"They are in Shadow Tower and Eastwatch-by-the-sea. And the Lord Commander was in contact for two months before we lost contact. He had left several Garrisons behind that we had contact with, but with no news from the commander, most of those have men have returned to the wall."

"Two rangings of about twenty men each have gone in search of the Lord Commander and his forces. But no word from them either."

Aranya's eyes narrowed. She did not like what she was hearing. "What was that you were saying earlier?" she asked Selwyn. "Doyle Swann? Is he a ranger?"

[Lord Rhodri Arryn]

"He is. Has he remained at Castle Black, or is he one of the lost rangers?"

[The Smith]

"I am not sure about Ser Swann. There were quite a lot of Rangers he could have gone with the Lord Commander or he could be at a differenant keep. He is not stationed here. I know my men." Every time Aranya talks a muscle twitches in his neck.

Aranya's face was expressionless, but her eyes were glinting again. She remembered what the crone had said. "Find this Doyle Swann, Mudd. Send men to look for him in the five castles you're still manning." If he's Rhodri's man, he's likely more trustworthy and intelligent than this lot.

"Aranya, again, mind yourself. We are not here to issue orders. Lord Mudd, you asked what we offered from the King. What we can promise is nothing. He asked us to tell us what news there was of the Wall, he had heard nothing at all from the Brothers. We can relay to him the news of the North, but it seems dire."

Aranya fought back a snarl and sat down.

Looking at Selwyn seemed to calm Perrin Mudd, "Well the situation is bad, but the winter seems to have quieted the Wildlings as well. There has been almost no raiding or attacks for as long as the Lord Commander has been gone."

"If your king were to send reinforcements, they would have to be here long term. There is no immediate threat."

My dreams tell differently. "That was what you kept assuring us until Hallise swelled up his army. With winter come wildlings." And other things. "But nevertheless, you shall have your reinforcements. I have little hope for Wendwater and his band of brothers."
