Ser Brandon is elegantly attired in a silk waistcoat in the bronze of House Royce, with a blue silk sash in the style of the Braavosi. He rides alongside the litter on the dappled destrier Elane had found. Today, like most days now, he is freshly bathed.
"It would have been death to his legs to be aboard a ship for months, Mistress," Ser Brandon says. "I gifted him to Rhodri when I set out. Javelin died, you know. Mistress, there was something I mean to mention. My chambers are luxurious and comfortable, and I thank you. But they are in a remote corner of the manse. I fear that if you were in danger, I would be too far to rescue you."
"It would be better if I could stay in that small chamber the adjoins your apartments. It is not nearly so spacious, but my needs are simple. And I would be close to the girls as well. That way I would be ready to protect you."

"I am sorry to hear of Javelin's death." Elane had never cared for horses the way her sister and cousins did, but she knew the affection Rhodri had for his magnificent destrier. She didn't understand it, but she respected it. "I hope the grey destrier will be a worthy replacement."
Ser Brandon's next words brought a wave of color to her face. "Those chambers? That would be most improper, I fear. Do not think I doubt your honor," she added. "But those chambers as so close to my room, and the servants..."
Elane fell into a thoughtful silence. "Perhaps the room opposite mine?" she suggested. "It is close by, and as luxurious as your present chamber. The girls will be just down the corridor from us."

"I did not mean to suggest that, mistress..." Ser Brandon smiles, "I am only thinking of your safety. I wasn't aware the chambers opposite yours were free. That would be acceptable."
OOC: I started using Mistress since I realized that Elane isn't actually "Lady Elane". Lady is equivalent of Lord, and technically, she isn't...

OOC: Gotcha.
Elane accepted the title 'Mistress', realizing that it was as good as any. "Of course you didn't, ser," Elane said. "I am grateful that you look after me so well. I begin to think that if you had been with me in those gardens, that little Ghiscari wouldn't have managed to stab me."

Back home, Elane notes Rose's delight in the litter, and has a special, smaller litter made for the girl, and shows her the present one evening. Noting Ser Brandon's expression, Elane suggests that Rose might like to learn how to ride as well.

"A Westerosi lady should know how to ride a horse. I would endeavor to teach her, though I know little of sidesaddle. Could you help, Mistress?" Ser Brandon asks.

"I do know something of horseriding. I think I could help." Despite her lack of interest in horses, Elane was an extremely good rider. Hundreds of treks into the mountains, and riding through gold mines had given her a sure seat in the saddle.
The next day Elane bought a dappled grey pony, an elegant creature of the breed most popular in the Free Cities. Elane brought Rose out to see her new pony.

Rose was quite excited by the creature, especially when he nuzzled her hair and neck. "Thank you mistress!" she cries with a shriek. "I'll be the best rider."

"That will make your father happy," Elane says. She isn't quite sure how to go about teaching, but she helps Rose up into the saddle and corrects her seat. As the lesson proceeds, Elane finds that she is enjoying herself almost as much as Rose is.

Rose is a eager child, and quickly gets herself in trouble by trying to do more than she can -- goading the animal to move even when she doesn't know how to hold herself on. She falls twice before Elane has one of her servants hold the pony tightly while Rose learns to sit ahorse.
Rose also keeps trying to put one leg on each side.

Elane smiles at Rose's antics, and cautions her to slow down. The pony is walked around the riding ring while Elane watches Rose's seat and posture. When Rose tries to sit astride like a man, Elane is displeased.
"That is unmaidenly," Elane scolds. "And you'll tear your habit if you sit like that. I will not raise immodest girls, Rose. Your father is a man of honor, and you will not reflect well on him if you are so improper." She corrects Rose's seat, so that she sits sidesaddle.

"But I you can ride faster like that! Boys don't sit all silly and sideways," Rose complains, and puts on her best pout.

Elane looks amused. "I can ride fast, and up big mountains too. It's all in the control, my dear girl. As for boys, they sit astride because they're not as good as us. But shhh, dear, that's a secret."

Elane saw that she was defeated. "Very well then."
