"You did well," Aranya told Roland. As she dribbled butter over the sizzling boar, it melted hotly on the spiced meat, giving off a maddening scent. Aranya's stomach growled.
Aranya gave him a long look, and again her eyes seemed to pierce him. "No, you don't, do you? You will have many companions, both woman and creature." She smiled. "I was like that, until I realized I wanted Selwyn forever."

Rhodri smiles. "Combat is a sort of hunt, no? Do you have the stomach to fight some more? If you are to serve the Vale Watch, I will need to send you into danger. The clans must be sorted."

"Combat can indeed be the hunt, especially in the Down. It's a rough place to be. A fertile lowland deep in the mountains, so you really have more clansmen than Valemen out there. None of the clans are organized enough to really attack a holdfast, even a weak one like the Down." Roland paused, seeming to be somewhere else, "That is, they can't get organized because we used what limited numbers we had to keep them bleeding. Father would organize raiding parties, and we really fought the way the clansmen tend to." Roland realized he'd begun to run on a little, and looked directly into the eyes of the Warden of the East, "In any case, milord, it is no matter of stomach, but one of duty. I will serve you, however you bid me."

"Good. You already have an idea of what I want. But I will give you more men, more resources, the backing you need from the Eyrie to make safe the mountains," Rhodri says.

"There is no forever," Yohn says. "Only the passing, flashing lights of our eyes, which will grow grey and dim."

Roland nodded, and then stared at the forlorn child as he spoke.

OOC: No kidding.
"You speak without experience, nephew. Seeing through dreams or through a falcon's eyes does not teach you about the ways of the world. I fear you are right though. There will be no forever for you. Just remember to treat each fleeting lover as you would treat a weirwood." Aranya's mouth twitched.

"As eyes to see through? I will do that," Yohn says.

"No," Aranya said, a bit sharp. "You must never, ever, ever slip skins with another human. It's an abomination, but since you and I don't really care about that, I will also say that it will tear you from within, piece by piece, until nothing is left but an empty, malevolent shell. I have tried...dark things, things I am now ashamed of. Possessing other men is one of them. Do not ever do that, Yohn. You will wiser than me when you are older, but you must still be cautious not to abuse your power."
"As for women...I was talking about respect. You will love them and leave them, all of them, I know, but you must treat them with respect."

Yohn giggles. "That is what I meant, mother, that I would see through their eyes and be understanding. The greenmen already taught me never to slip skins with another man."

"Good," Aranya said, relaxing and biting into the chunk of hot meat. A servant brought them earthenware mugs of warm, spiced cider as they sat under the trees of the hunting lodge. It was a pleasant party on the grounds, with rich smells coming up from the open hearths.
"You seem cheerful," she said after a while. "Hunting seems to agree with you."

"No, but flying does. I want to fly every day," he says.

"You're an Arryn after all," Aranya grinned. "As high as honor, or at least the mountains. One of my men is a wildling skinchanger, a Black Ear. He has a falcon. If you want, I can introduce him to you when we return to King's Landing. He will be riding back to the Vale as well."

Yohn scowls. "Maybe I would like a fox more."

"Why a fox?" Aranya asked, laughing.

"Sleek, and quiet, and clever," Yohn says. "A wolf can only fight, but a fox can do many things."
