Garrett laughed, forgetting his wounds. "That's quite a tale," he grinned. "He clearly saw the value in Kit Kidwell, princess and pride and his captain be damned." He chuckled again, and winced as it caused fresh waves of pain. "I actually would not mind that medic, ser."

Ser Eddard motioned towards one of his men and a medic quickly scurried over, checking his wound under the bandages. Tutting, he said "You've re-opened it, ser. Lie still and I'll sew it up again and re-dress your injuries" he quickly and expertly got to work although not as gently as the maids at Winterfell had been, Garrett noted, wincing. Ser Eddard gave him some more wine and milk of the poppy to numb the pain. "Well, you'll have some tales to tell of your own now lad" he said, not unkindly "No doubt your brothers will be green with envy"

"Tales indeed," Garrett said bitterly. "I must confess, it's not nearly as exciting and romantic as they'd seem to a green squire."
"People won't understand, though. I'll have those who envy me, aye. Tommen will definitely be jealous," Garrett winced as the men removed his bandages. "Alliser doesn't care anymore. War and jousting was never really his thing - he calls himself a "knight of the mind", as if he's some maester. And he stands to inherit Redfort, while Tommen has already gone back to be made the Lord of Gull Tower. But Tommen will still be envious."
Garrett paused. Tommen had been the one to suggest that Addam join the joust, and he had left hurriedly when he'd seen Ser Donal's wrath. But Garrett could not say such a thing of his own brother, especially to a near stranger.

They continued riding, and soon reached the murky forests of the Neck. It was dark and cool and unnervingly quiet.

Eddard nodded somberly "Aye. To those who weren't there, I think the Battle at the Wall would seem a grand and glorious undertaking. Fightly valiantly against foes of legend" Eddard spat "We know better. There was several moments when I thought I'd met my end. One of those mammoths near crushed me as it fell and if not for the Stormshield's intervention during the battle, a wildling would have gutted me for sure as I lay there" he let the young man rest as the poppy began to take effect "At least it's over now lad. And the realm will know peace again"

Another rider emerged form the darkness of the forest, vaulting off her horse as she stopped directly in front of them, blocking their path. She made straight for Ser Eddard. "You have Garrett Redfort travelling with you, yes? Where is he?"

"Nobody important. Simply a messenger from Casterly Rock." She waves a letter at them, then lays it on her hand, clearly displaying the Lannister seal on the back. "From Lady Sara. Look, no sword, no weapons, all I want to do is give him a letter. Give it to him yourself if it bothers you that much."

"It's all right, Ser Eddard," Ser Garrett stepped out from behind the medics' wagon. The woman looked at him, and waved the letter with a smile.
Garrett Redfort gazed at the woman for a moment, and then beckoned her silently into the privacy of his tent. Once inside, he asked her, "What is it?" Sara had warned that she would not contact him, because of the danger.

The woman held out the letter and he took it and opened it. His lips moved silently as he read the words. "She's pregnant," he whispered. I'm going to be a father. He stared blankly at the parchment. He wasn't sure if he was proud, upset or indifferent. All he felt was surprise. Casterly Rock seemed so distant, after all that had happened.

The woman rode off, and Ser Eddard's and Ser Garrett's party packed up and were on the move again.
"She was indiscreet," Garrett said in a low voice. "Waving that seal in your face and mentioning names. Whatever you have guessed, I must ask you to keep your silence, on your honor as a knight."

Garrett bowed his head. "You honor me, my lord, but after I bury Ser Donal, my place is with Lord Rhodri Royce."
He paused, thinking. "The city was sacked by the stag's men, wasn't it? I will help repair and defend it until it is safe, as my last service to Ser Donal."
