Donal swore angrily.
The journey from Thorn Hill to Stoney Sept had been relatively swift but they had, literally, been bogged down since then. After skirting around Harrenhall and Riverrun, it had taken nearly 3 days of delicate negotiations to convince Lord Frey to let his force cross at the Twins. Lord Craston Frey had been as obstinate as his house's reputation suggested. At one point Donal was convinced he would have to assault the bridge to be able to cross but after a few veiled threats he had managed to propose a compromise by offering to take 2 of his sons as wards. He had wondered why Lord Frey had agreed so quickly to that and now he knew.
Donal shook his head as he looked back at Walder Rivers and Holdor Frey. At 17, they could not be more different from each other, though they had the same father. Walder was broad, fat and bad tempered though he revelled in the idea of 'escaping' the Twins and forging his own destiny with Donal. He seemed to be able to handle his own when training with the others although chivalry seemed an alien concept to him and Donal had had to step in several times to prevent him from attacking a foe who had yielded.
Holdor on the other hand was a shy bookish young man, who was completely intimidated by his brother. The first, and only, time he had been given a weapon and trained with the others had been a complete disaster and he had near decapitated himself before being easily disarmed. Donal got the feeling that Lord Frey had sent him with Donal to "toughen him up".
Donal shook his head to clear it. The constant back-biting between the squires was proving an unwelcome distraction and young Garrett Redfort was often acting more as nursemaid than sworn sword. After leaving the Twins, they had crossed through Deepwood Motte and Moat Cailan easily enough, although some eyebrows had been raised at the size of his force and Donal was certain ravens had been sent to Winterfell to expect his arrival.
Donal had not planned to stop at Winterfell at all, but now felt that he had best pay his respects or else face disquiet from the smallfolk and minor lordlings of the North.
Behind him, yet another yelling match had started between Amdle Flowers and Walder Rivers. Despite, or perhaps because of, both being illegimate children they were almost always at each other's throats. He sighed and went back to quieten them once more.
ooc: Donal's force is now 2 days from Winterfall
