Chella, daughter of Thella, daughter of Chella, daughter of Thella, daughter of Chella was the chief of the Black Ears, as many of her foremothers had been before her. Nothing she loved more than the prospect of a really good fight. Following Arayna was the least she could do.

Jach, son of Fum, heard of the adventure and grunted his approval. The Stone Crows mounted their shaggy garrons and rode to Aranya's call to battle. His sons Fee and Fie already rode with the Redspear. He'd hate for war to end and leave his axe unbloodied.

Aranya was glad to have the chief of the Black Ears with her. The woman was not only clever in battle, but as strong as an aurochs and quick as a deer. The night before they reached the Rock, Aranya invited Chella of the Black Ears and Ulwick of the Milk Snakes - he had warmed her bed twice and was a good fighter, so she was friendly to him although she had lost interest - into her tent to share mulled wine and roasted hare.
"We've just received word that my cousin Rhodhri is coming up the Sea Road," Aranya said, leaning back on her furs.
Chella's eyes widened. "The Redspear? I've known him since he was a boy of thirteen." She gave a deep, rumbling laugh. "It will be interesting see the boy again."
"In the battle, I expect he will have instructions for you," Aranya said. "So will I, and perhaps Selwyn Stone. You will be under our command."
"What of Elane?" Ulwick asked.
Aranya snorted. "Elane is my sister, and I love her dearly," she said. "She's a clever girl, but she fights with words, not swords. I'm the warrior here, and you will be following my orders, not hers."

Jach joined the party lounging in Aranya's tent. He was an enormous man, said to have a touch of the giant in him. Chella had heard some story about a pot of beans but wasn't quite sure if it wasn't just a fairy story.
Chella didn't mind Arayna, a little skinny for a warrior, but quick, she'd slip a knife into you sooner than look at you. Ulwick was like all Milk Snakes, weedy and thin, and some how tamed. But Jach, now Jach was a fine figure of a man. And good with the ax.

A man enters the tent behind Jach.
"What is it?" Aranya asked, recognizing him as one of Breyn's men.
"The siege has been joined by Lord Bracken, Lord Frey, Lord Tully and Lord Darry," the man said. "They've sent reinforcements."
"River men," Jach growled. "Jach son of Fum does not fear scaly little fish."
"What time is it?" Aranya asked.
"An hour to midnight," the man said. "King's Callen men have already set up their tents, and they must be setting up siege engines now."
Aranya turned to Ulwick. "I have instruction for you and your Snakes."

When the Milk Snakes had left on their mission, Aranya felt restless and worried whenever she thought about them. She needed some quick distraction. Tall Jach was glaring.
"We could have gone too," he growled, glancing at Chella for support. "They have need of our strength."
"Aye," Chella agreed, smiling at Jach. “But they are strong themselves.”
Jach looked at Aranya, whose eyes were glinting with curiosity. “I’m stronger. We should go after them.”
"But it's warmer in here," Chella said.
"It's warmer still under my furs," Aranya purred. She slid into Jach's lap. "We could do with a strong one in there, couldn't we Chella?"
"Aye," said Chella again, her smile widening. This time Jach didn’t argue.

"Who farted?" said Chella, some time in the night.

"Must have been the beans" she thought.

Aranya laughed, left the pallet and donned her clothing. "While Jach the Windy sleeps, do you feel like another bottle of wine? I have some more left, just Dornish swill, but average wine is better than no wine. And I'm wide awake, so a chat would be fun."

"Wine is good. Helps preserve my black ears." She grinned and joined Aranya. "So skinny girl, who we gonna kill?"

"The Milk Snakes have their work, you know of that," Aranya said, passing Chella a stone cup and filling it. "They won't be returning any time soon. As for you Black Ears and Stone Crows, you will be riding with me in the battle, as my guard. I'd sooner have you guarding me than any orange cloaks. And if we get as close as Hightower, all the better."
She leaned back. "I always dreamed of riding with Lord Alyn into battle, when I was a girl. Being a bastard makes you want to prove yourself."

She smiled. "I'm seventeen. They call you old enough to be a woman and bed you, but say that you want to fight, and they call you a girl and push you away. Breyn's a rare one though. Not many lords would let me join his troops and ride to battle with him."

Chella chucked back the cup of wine. Sour was fine, she liked sour.
"What you gotta learn little girl is all these men just wanna fuck you. Maybe they wanna fuck you with the one eyed snake, maybe they wanna fuck you by putting you 'tween them and some other snakes. Boys get fucked like that all the time. Just make sure you fuck somebody back."
She took out her spear and started sharpening the end.

"With a spear like that, Chella?" Aranya laughed. "They'd call me the Redspear Maid, wouldn't that be fun?" She stood. "The sun is rising. Come outside, Chella. Time to go fuck some stags."
When they went out, they saw Breyn's man listening to an outrider. Aranya strode over, Chella following. When they reached the men, they heard the outrider saying, "...and they say that Baratheon men tried to kill Lord Darry. They didn't succeed though."
"Aranya, I'm so sorry," Breyn's man said. "There was a fire in the woods. Ten Baratheon men got killed, but your wildlings died...but wait." He frowned. "If ten stag's men died in the woods, who tried to kill Lord Darry?"
Aranya pushed her hair back. "My Snakes were to kill Lord Darry. Too bad it didn't work."

"They didn't die though," she continued. She looked at the outrider. "Those weren't Baratheon men in Darry's tent, those were Milk Snakes. I expect that Darry's screaming made them run, because otherwise they would have been killed."
"They haven't found Darry's attackers," the outrider said.
"And they won't, if they look for Baratheon soldiers," Aranya said. "I told them to change their uniforms as soon as they could."
