The Crown Prince, Aerys Targaryen has fallen sick and died of a fall fever. When word reached Aemon of his son's death he grew mad with grief, and attempted to end his own life.

The new heir apparent is now the childless, Aegon Targaryen X, Aemon's younger brother.
