"Soon, yes. I want to make one last bid to win the queen's affection and I am debating whether we ought approach the Royces or wait until after the tourney. Or during, if they choose to attend. But one supposes such an event would be of less interest to Lord Bayard I did, however, assure Ser Donnel that all possible provisions would be made for his father's comfort if he does wish to join us at the Hightower."

Gwayne nodded. "You speak sense, yet there is the not so small problem of the queen. I do not wish to lose my chances with Her Grace, yet it could offend Lord Royce if I refuse his daughter for something that might not happen. That's why I have been thinking about waiting."

"Put my name forward and then if matters don't work out with the Queen, switch my suit to yours. If it came to a choice, I'm sure Lord Bayard would prefer his daughter or niece marry the Lord Paramount of the Far Reach rather than a younger son." replied Gareth pragmatically. "Or alternatively you could seek a marriage elsewhere."

"I could, yes. I will propose you in the first instance. But it would be good if you came to speak for yourself also. Let us seek Lord Bayard together. If he does agree, it will stand you in good stead for the future."

Gareth nodded. "At the same time we don't want to appear too eager. But I am willing to make an initial inquiry."

"Then let us go as soon as we can," Gwayne vowed. "I am sure Lord Royce will see us. Hestrikes me as a man of sense."

Gareth rose and grabbed his cloak from the back of the chair he had been seated on. "There's no time like the present." he declared. He looked sideways at his elder brother. "Unless you have more pressing matters?"

"I do not," said Gwayne. "But we must be patient if Lord Royce would prefer to wait until morning."
