Oswyn nodded, feigning understanding though he was not especially well-versed in that period history.
"Rose may be of her bloodline, but none of the qualities seem to have been inherited." he replied.

"Perhaps not," Izzy replied. "Yet she is the only ruling queen Westeros knew before Queen Rose came to the throne. I have to wonder if she will be content to have Lord Tyrell rule in her name as long as they both live. But I am sure her husband - whether or not he is my brother - will want to take a role too."

"Some would take a stronger role than others." he replied. "This is hardly the time for a passive ruler."

"I agree. This is why the queen needs a strong husband who cares for the realm. With a family who will offer the necessary support if the need arises. You may be sure that House Hightower will rally to the queen's cause."
She smiled very sweetly.
"I do not envy Her Grace. But I am determined to do what I can to help. As is Gwayne."

"I will take the matter under consideration. Many worthy lords seek Her Grace's hand." he returned her smile. "Though you have certainly made a beneficial impression on your brother's behalf."
"We all serve at her leisure."

"All true men and women must do so," she replied. "Perhaps you might advise me who the other candidates are for the queen's hand? I would be..."
She leaned in again. "Most grateful."

"Your brother, Edric Stark, and Lord Bayard's son Ser Donnel are the only candidates I am aware of that are being seriously considered." he answered, seeing little harm in earning her gratitude.

"All of them are worthy candidates, but you must allow for a sister's partiality, my lord. May I ask if Ser Donnel and Edric are being considered by the queen, or by Lord Tyrell? I know the two are not mutually exclusive. I know Ser Donnel of old, though time and distance made us grow apart."
The news troubled her. She knew little of Edric Stark, yet a diplomatic marriage might be on the cards if the North had to be placated. But then it might be out of the question if the present uncertainty turned to war. As for Ser Donnel, he was a different sort of problem. He had the advantage of a father already placed on the Small Council, and was handsome besides. Yet if it were necessary for the crown to cement other alliances, perhaps there would be no need to give the Royces another voice close to the queen. Izzy reminded herself that Tyrell at least would probably be wary of giving too much power to one family.

"I should not betray the confidence of Her Grace and Lord Tyrell by revealing inclinations shared in private confidence." he replied, with a wry smile.

She ran her hand along his arm. "But I thought we were friends, Lord Oswyn? And I will hardly shout your information from the streets. I merely wish to...determine the level of competition Gwayne faces. Is that so very wrong?"

"Heavy competition." he answered simply, brandy catching in his throat a bit as she touched his arm. "Though less than if I entered the running."

She laughed very softly. "I can well believe that." She wondered if Oswyn had sworn off marriage after his experience with Amelia. "Two rivals are better than three, to be sure. Though if our houses were not already allied I might have to make certain you were not tempted by the queen."

"I had expected such underhanded tactics were beneath your house." he replied in a playful tone.

Izzy shrugged delicately. "How kin of you to say so. But since our houses are already allied, there is no need for such things, is there?"

"Well when you put it that way, I do have some kingly qualities." he mused. "A crown would fit my brow well, to say the last. Perhaps I was too hasty."
