The keep awarded to Lord Oswyn Baratheon, along with the lordship of the island of Southtide. Hammerfell is a fortress of Tyroshi design, comprised of imposing battlements constructed around a central ornate spire , that served as their foothold on the Stepstones for near a century. Originally called Archon's Pride, the keep was painstakingly constructed upon a tidal island off the mainland of Southtide. The natural causeway that connects Hammerfell to the mainland is exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide, making besieging it properly without naval support a daunting task. Its dungeons are rumored to contain a collection of ingenious and infamous Tyroshi torture devices. Lord Oswyn Baratheon had the name of the keep changed to Hammerfell upon his acquisition of its lordship.
Southtide is a medium sized island on the western end of the Stepstones. It has a population of a few hundred, mostly farmers and fisherfolk. It is notable for its pear, lemon, olive, and orange orchards, imported from Tyrosh, which grow splendidly in the sandy, loamy, and slightly acidic soil. Numerous distilleries for the production of the famed Tyroshi pear brandy also benefit the island economy. It has a small natural harbor as well, nestled within one of Southtide's many coves.
