Sain sent for the captain of the guards. "His name was Lancel, I know little else." his face turned sour, "And do not imagine you command me, spy." he said the last word with spite.
His face returned back to its usual relaxed fatherly expression and went to Alys' side. "This is strange indeed. Someone wealthy payed this guard and someone else had him murdered."

Sain sent for the captain of the guards. "His name was Lancel, I know little else." his face turned sour, "And do not imagine you command me, spy." he said the last word with spite. His face returned back to its usual relaxed fatherly expression and went to Alys' side. "This is strange indeed. Someone wealthy payed this guard and someone else had him murdered." Karys stopped at the door, her back to Sain. She did not even look at him as she spoke. "I expected you were intelligent enough to accept that your limited expertise in matters such as this pales compared to my own. If my presence is so offensive to you I can conduct my inquiries privately and leave you to...yours." From the way she spoke the last word it was clear she did not think he would turn up much. Then she exited properly.

Sain scowled at the back of her as she left. "I have been brother and uncle to a lord and, the foreigner thinks to speak to me as a fool." he muttered to himself. He turned to face the Captain and told him of the situation.
"What can you tell us of this?" he asked, holding up the coins and motioning towards the deceased man's body.

Alys rolled her eyes at the conflict between the two. "Yes, I agree. Somebody paid him...but for what? That is the worrying thing. Perhaps he was selling information to somebody."

"And perhaps he changed his mind and was offed. Doesn't explain why they left the money, perhaps they made a mistake." he paused in thought, "We shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet."

Captain Gregor looked confused at Sain, "My Lord?"

Sain sighed. "The guard was found murdered here, whilst carrying an extraordinarily large sum of gold. I don't recall you giving a raise so I'd like you to tell me what you know about this man and anything that may help us." he explained slowly with visible frustration.

"That is Lancel. He has been serving here longer then I. I am not sure what else to tell you." He frowned. "He served well, my lord."

"Keep on alert for anyone suspicious or for any others killed. You are dismissed." he turned back to Alys, Sain was pinching his brow, obviously very stressed. "What do you make of all this?"

"It's most odd. I think we need to find out who paid him. And if there was anyone suspicious in the castle today." She frowned. "Can we get a letter to Gwayne in the Stepstones?"

"I'll see to it." he turned to leave but paused. "Oh, and Alys, be careful who you trust, we may have a spy about."

Alys nodded as she got to her feet. "I will be. I think we should talk to Lancel's friends among the guards, see if he had been behaving strangely."
