Cassar, the Volantene servant, retrieves an excellent imported vintage from a side cabinet and pours two glasses. Bayard seats himself in one of the chairs surrounding the Table and swirls his wine, but does not drink.
"What sort of security breach are we talking about?" Royce asks. His voice is still calm, but Tomas can sense he has the Vale lord's full attention.

"The serious kind," Ser Tomas replied, "My lord has reason to believe that some thieves may attempt to make entrance to your home, in order to search it for... some rare and important...artifacts."

Bayard raised his eyebrows, stretching his scars beneath. "They will be disappointed, I am afraid. My son wears the runed armor in the Stepstones, and it would need to be quite the thief to take it from his shoulders."

"Forgive me, but that is not what Lord Saxon means. He said there were three of them, given to your family a very long time ago, for safe keeping. And that they must not fall in to the wrong hands. And that you would know what he meant." Ser Tomas sipped his wine. It was very good, and a wet throat made this ordeal of speaking in codes easier.

"It sounds as though Lord Saxon has a better knowledge of these... artifacts? Than I do myself. I shall have my men look through the vaults to see if they might find something of that description." Bayard shrugs. "But regardless of their target, thieves are not to be tolerated in the Eyrie. Did your master divine who these thieves' employer might be?"

Ser Tomas seemed baffled that Lord Bayard was not aware of what he was talking, but since he himself wasn't aware what he was talking about, he didn't quite know how to respond.
"He did, but he did not pass their names on to me. I suppose if we can find these artifacts you are looking for, it may be something of a clue as to what kind of men would come to take them."

"So your master is aware that there are thieves coming to my castle, and also who has hired them," Bayard says slowly, then pauses to take his first sip. "And he deems it appropriate to share with me the first of these facts, but not the second." Royce lets that sit for an uncomfortably long time, taking a second sip from his glass. "I confess I rarely have the patience for these types of games any more, Ser Tomas. What is Lord Saxon's price for the latter piece of information?"

"Sorry milord," Ser Tomas said, "he didn't say anything about them being hired. And I think it's less about telling you, then it was not wishing to tell me, beginning your pardon. Perhaps if you have an opportunity to speak face to face, it can be addressed. As for price, the only fee my lord requests is that I be permitted to stay here until an attempt is made, and if the perpetrators are caught, that I be permitted to attend any and all interrogations you conduct. "

"Are you aware how soon this thievery will be attempted?" Royce asks, not immediately answering the question.

"Not precisely no," Ser Tomas replied, "Although given the delay between when the information became available to my lord, and the time it took me to arrive, I would say it should not be terribly long."

Royce lapses into another spell of silence for a time. "I believe," he says, "You will be best positioned at Sky or Snow. There is but one path in and one out, and I will authorize you to search those travelling in either direction."

"As you wish Lord Royce." Ser Tomas said with a slight incline of his head. "I shall do my best."

"In consideration for your Lord's kind gesture, I shall be more than happy to share the results gleaned from any interrogation with Lord Cave. But given the sensitivity of the issue, I believe I owe him the respect of discussing it with him in person."

"I'm afraid that's not entirely adequate," Ser Tomas replied, "my instructions say be present for the questioning. It's a point on which my lord insisted. I needn't participate only see the questions you asked. Of course I expect you may learn many interesting things which you'll wish to discuss with him personally, but Lord Saxon is a man who prefers to have his own eyes on a situation."

Bayard does not appear perturbed by the envoy's insistence. "You have already told me that Lord Saxon does not trust you with the information of who orders these attacks. I mean no disrespect, Ser, but I intend to follow his lead in this matter. You are welcome to make use of my rookery, and should your Lord write otherwise I will reconsider the issue."
