"I am," Gwayne agreed. "We were half-drunk at the time. Nobody took us seriously, not even the ones who hadn't even started to grow stubble yet." He grinned. "One of the lads had a small beard. Forgot to shave. The tavern's patrons found it amusing, I believe. But you'd pass for a girl well enough."
He glanced at Edric. "Stark, then? You must be kin to my squire, Torrhen."

"You're very good at making friends are you?" Mychel observed, resting his head on the back of his hand and taking a large gulp of the ale.

"I do well enough," Gwayne remarked. "I have always done my best to observe the rules of chivalry. Not so much when I'm drinking, of course. Unless there's ladies present. I'd never say crude things to a lady."

"Do I count as a lady? Perhaps you should put that down, ser." Mychel replied, dryly, "what if I came in wearing a dress? What then?"

Gwayne laughed.
"You don't count, of course. Not to me, not now. Though it might be fun to see if you can fool someone else, if you're game for that."

"I am not... how did you say... game for that." Mychel replied, he'd dealt with this kind of attitude most of his life, it was why he came to what looked like the quietest tavern in the area. Not quiet enough. "Perhaps I should try and just not telling people I am a boy, the life of a sweet, innocent lady must surely be easier."

Edric had been chewing on his overcooked meat in silence, listening to the two gab about dressing as girls. The southerner's comment about Torrhen made him look at the man. "Ah. You must be Gwayne Hightower, then," he said, giving up on his bland meal and shoving the whole plate under the bar for his direwolf to eat. Havoc sniffed the piece of steak from his shadowy corner under the bar and destroyed it within mere seconds.
Edric walked over to the two with his ale and extended a hand. "I am his brother, Edric. How is he?" he asked. "I have not seen much of him since coming to the city." Truthfully, his little brother was a stranger to him now.

"A lady's life might be easier," Gwayne remarked. "But it sounds awfully dull. I could not bear to live a life where I had to sit and sew and didn't get to train in the yard every day." He paused as a thought struck him. "I am sorry if I caused you offence, it was not my intention. I have not been a knight long, in truth, and this was the kind of banter I had with the other squires."
He grinned at Edric. "I am indeed Gwayne Hightower. Torrhen is well, and does his duty as a squire. I've no complaints, certainly. If you like, I could spare him to come visit you some time."

"Well met," he said, taking a seat next to them. "It would be nice of you to let him visit his family." I suppose.
"D'you reckon he will be a knight one day?" he asked.

Gwayne drank some ale before he answered. "It's possible. I'd be happy to knight him if he wishes, but I know you northerners don't very often have knights, because of your beliefs. It will be for Torrhen to decide, when he's earned the right to do so. A battlefield knighthood is also possible. I don't think it matters what a man believes then. But a man knighted in the sept has to keep vigil and be anointed by the seven oils, so that might be more problematic," he said. "But as I said, it's your brother's decision."

"I don't know which gods he favours. I thought you might have an idea, that's why I asked," Edric replied, finding the thought of being 'anointed by the seven oils' pretty ridiculous. Southern customs. "My uncle is the Lord Commander of Kingsguard so Torrhen wouldn't probably feel awfully alone among us, should he decide to be a knight. How did you earn your knighthood, in a battle or a sept, covered in oils?" he asked, smirking a little so it was clear which he deemed the better option.

Gwayne was not entirely sure about his squire's religious preferences, though he knew the boy valued many other southron customs. AFter all, it was perfectly possible the boy accompanied him to the sept when asked to do so simply out of duty. Gwayne wasn't much interested in finding out whether Torrhen prayed to the old gods.
"I was knighted by my master, Lord Tarly of Horn Hill," he explained. "Alas, I have not yet had the opportunity to fight in a real battle outside of dealing with bandits and the like. Most men of rank are knighted thus, unless they are not among the faithful. Or unless they are exceptional warriors in their extreme youth, but that's not common. A battlefield knighthood is more likely to be given to a man who cannot afford the usual trappings of knighthood. House Hightower does not have that problem."

Edric sipped on his ale, previously unaware that knights were supposed to pay for that crap. "Well, I am sure you did something worthy to earn it, then," he told him in a friendly manner, but was in truth unconvinced. It did not really matter. "It is funny that I should find you two in a relatively gritty tavern considering you are both sons of the richest lords in the realm," he said, smiling a little.

Gwayne grinned and said "Oh? Our companion had not yet got around to introducing himself to me. So you have the advantage of me, there."
