"It is not your place, it is your King's" Maerys replied, "I will leave the rest to my hand. Thank you all for you attending my Coronation." He walked from the room quickly.

"Those 'desolate rocks' control the most important trade route for two continents, Lord Stark, a route many ships bound to and from White Harbour employ." Oswyn spoke up, interested now that the topic had turned to a battleground so close to home. "The Stormlands held a foothold at one point, now overrun by pirates and foreigners alike. I would be honored to lead a crusade to reclaim and govern them in the name of the Crown."

Bayard bows to the level protocol requires for his king's entrance, then once again for his exit. He tended to think the word 'crusade' a bit overzealous for a pile of rocks, but did not see fit to argue the point one way or the other. "I have no doubt the knights of the Seven Kingdoms will triumph," Bayard says, "But there is the issue of getting to the islands in the first place. The navy of the Volantene league has a fearsome reputation."

"I'm sure the Royal Fleet will do the bulk of any fighting." remarked Lothar, who had listened with interest to the exchange between the King, Aenys and the other Lord Paramounts. "It is the King's war after all."

Gerion showed his teeth in a humourless smile at Oswyn's meaningless jibe. He wasn't even important enough to concern himself with. The only thing he needed from him was an heir to his young daughter, ensuring blood ties to the Baratheon seat. After that...he was no longer needed and perhaps old slights could be resolved to his satisfaction.
Once the scope of the 'War' was made clear to him, and the King had left the room, Gerion grew bored by it all. The Steptones were of no concern to him, clear on the other side of Westeros. They lacked even the plunder and fertile lands to be considered of any use whatsoever. Some of his minor lords and knight would fall over themselves to join, in hope of lands or glory but he saw no strategic outcome, bar much bloodshed and he would do his utmost to ensure the western forces commitment was as light as possible and kept as clear of the conflict as he could. Let the other Houses earn 'glory' and pay the blood price for a few rocks in the ocean. That would leave them all the weaker at home, as they chased it.
He smirked, as he imagined Oswyn falling under some Lysene arrow storm or Volantene axe.

Lord Baratheon had remained silent throughout this conversation, considering. He'd agreed previously with Oswyn that the heir would do most of the talking, while the Lord himself simply watched his fellow lords, and the King.
"My apologies, but it appears that the Lord Hand may have forgotten that it is he who assumes highest command of his grace the King's armies in a time of war, superseding any Warden's title. 'The Hand speaks with the King's voice, leads the King's armies, drafts the King's laws,'" Lord Baratheon said, quoting from the legal statute that laid out the authority and duties of the office of Hand. "It seems that, if the Lord Hand does not intend to shirk his duties, then the position of a 'Grand Marshal' would be redundant. As for the Stepstones, my son is correct. Three fourths of all trade coming from the East passes through the Stepstones, and if his grace, the King, were to grant us the necessary resources we could sweep the pirates from their coves and bring much gold to the crown's treasury," Lord Sammael added, meeting the Hand's eyes and holding his gaze.

With a chuckle Aurane raised his voice. "Would this be the wrong time to offer my daughter Teirney as a ward to the Crown?" He laughed again.

Harold sighed. "I feel that the Stepstones are a key point in any relation to the East, if we want to improve relations with the west, that is a perfect location to begin." He says.

Lord Baratheon chuckled softly in amusement, as the more sycophantic of the lords present practically fell over themselves to offer up hostages to the Royal house. He looked across the table at where Lord Royce sat, noting with pleasure that he had also made no move to offer up his children to the Targaryens.

"Well, if there's to be war, I fear the North can offer little aid on its own. The Manderly fleet out of White Harbor is meager at best. If any sizable number of our soldiers are to be fielded, we will need sea transport. Perhaps the Ironborn could provide it." Eirek gives a glance the empty seat where Urrigon Greyjoy should have been.

Aenys nodded at Tully, "We will speak later." Then he turned his attention to Stark, and said, "We have made a deal with the Braavosi and they will provide ships for us."

Gerion threw a glance across to Hightower, wondering how he would feel about the King not trusting the Redwyne fleet to the task. He also frowned as Lord Stark pointed out the Ironborn's absence, which worried him. Assuming the westermen were mobilised, that left Lannisport and the villages along the coast perilously short of defenders.
"Where is all the coin for this war coming from?" he asked curiously. "Considering the number of ships we will need to move our men, they could not have come cheap" he frowned.

Bertram laughed, "Do not worry Gerion. At the current time we will not need any of your gold, but if things do not go well to begin with.... ummm.... who can say...."
