Carmesí had no verbal reply, but her even, lingering, half-lidded gaze was acknowledgement enough of the astonishing news. There was little more than a twinge in her high brow as she contemplated the speaker. Her daughter Salomae sat dutifully beside her, scribbling notes and observations on all of the proceedings, including the reactions of all the guests in attendance.

Gerion had a faint smile on his face as he enjoyed Lord Bayard's agitation. He doubted "No Eyes" was high on the new King's list of desirable abilities in his Wardens.
He frowned though, as he considered the ramifications of this move. Though largely ceremonial, the Warden position carried with it the overlordship of the region in question and, in times of war, allowed them to command those region's forces in battle. As the current Warden of the West, House Lannister had everything to lose by the status quo being altered to any large degree.
"We are of course, all at the service of King Maerys as he so desires" he said, obsequiously "Though I do hope he remembers that the Lannister's have held the Western title since the Conquest" he remembered the repercussions of mad Allard's reign and how tenuously they had held onto it, but held they had. "And have always been staunch allies to the Targaryen lineage. We would be pleased to continue to serve in this role under our new King, should he see fit to keep us in this position" his tone indicated anything other than this was surely impossible.

Gwayne, listening quietly, tried not to laugh at Lord Royce's comment. He felt the lord made a good point. The Hightowers had nothing to lose by the change, at least not yet, and possibly all to gain. But if the new King and his Hand meant to make many changes to age old customs, there was no telling what else they might do, who they might target next. So he felt uneasy. Yet he was only a newmade knight and nobody was likely to ask for his opinion, Tyrell least of all, so he waited to see what the lord of Highgarden would say in response to Royce and Lannister.

Aenys Targaryen entered the room. The Toad was dressed in his worn armor. He was followed by the lord commander of the Kings Guard.
He looked around the room and then took the seat reserved for the Lord Hand.

Eirek looked about the room, a bit confused, when he realized his error. "Ah, and here I thought Lord Tyrell was displaying the famed subtle Southern wit and having a jest. How does the Hand intend to make up for this insult to the realm's greatest families?"
He did not bother censoring himself as The Toad entered, and merely gave his uncle, the Lord Commander, a curt nod.

Aenys spoke clearly and faced Stark directly, "The duties of a Warden have always been those of a soldier. Yet it had been treated as a title or heirloom. I think every man here who has fought in battle will agree that the must important cause for defeat is poor command."

Eirek stifled a snide remark. "Granted."

Lothar Hightower was not surprised when the Targaryen prince took the Hand's seat. He had suspected as much as soon as Tyrell had made the announcement that the King had made a new appointment to the position.
"So are you suggesting my lord Prince, that the current holders of the titles lack the ability to fulfill their duties adequately?" he asked mildly.

"No. I am not saying that. I merely want to make sure that the best men available are the ones holding those positions. If the current man is the best man then he shall retain his rank." Aenys said calmly, "I would like to speak with all those who qualify for their position and ascertain the best men for the job."

Gerion raised an eyebrow at that response. "Qualified? What do you mean by that? It's obvious that I am the only man qualified to lead the western forces, though I cannot speak for the other wardens. A good soldier, does not make a good leader. And why the urgency with this change, just after the coronation" his eyes narrowed suspiciously. "Is the King planning on starting a war? Pissing off half the noble houses in the realm with ill-thought out change is hardly the best way to prepare" he said bluntly.

Aurane moved his chair just a bit away from his father, dragging it, which caused an uncomfortably loud scraping sound as it past across the floor.

Eirek nods along with Gerion's comment, adding, "At least we have the comfort of knowing that we'll be auditioning like a pack of damn mummers for our rightful titles. That makes it all better."

Aenys replied slowly, "I think we can all agree that a Warden's duties are purely with military matters."

"Traditionally, yes. Now it will likely involve quite a bit more licking the Hand's arsehole."
