House Baratheon of Storm's End, established over seven hundred years ago by the baseborn brother of Aegon the Conqueror, has endured its share of waxes and wanes over the centuries. Notable for legendary knights, like the Laughing Storm and King Robert the First, House Baratheon reigned strong and prosperous for the first two centuries of their dynastic rule in King's Landing, and their holdings in the Stormlands were merely an extension of the royal estates. However in the year 506, peace was shattered by a Targaryen invasion, sparking off dynastic struggles that would last the better part of the next century and a half. King Rodrick II was deposed by the dragon-riding Aegon IX, whose son (Aemon VI) was in turn deposed by Rodrick's son, King Callen I. After Callen's murder, his twin boys ruled the Seven Kingdoms one after the other; the elder of the two was named Rickon I in 516, with several regents serving the realm until he reached his majority. Rickon's early reign was marked by turmoil, when his cousins Avery and Andry rebelled and attempted to usurp the throne for themselves, and then later, when his Hand, Lord Horas Blackwood, siezed King's Landing in a lightning coup d'etat that was barely foiled by the Lords of the Vale and their steadfast support of the true King and Regent.

Years later, the strange and mysterious Basilisk Invaders landed on the western coasts, razing towns and cities as far eastward as the capital itelf before their invasion was halted. It was after this war that it was discovered that King Rickon and his twin brother Rodrick had been swapped at birth by their mother, and the King abdicated in favor of his brother's greater rights, making him King Rodrick III. Rodrick's rule was a disaster; his lecherous and unpleasant behavior sparked numerous rebellions that he was always able to put down by virtue of his legendary prowess on the battlefield. However, as soon as one rebellion was quelled, he would drive one of his former allies away, nursing the seeds of the next war. When Rodrick and nearly his entire household was murdered by agents of the Cult of the Dread God, Rodrick's eldest son became King Selwyn I, called Selwyn the Scarred for wounds he took during the assassinations of his family. Selwyn's reign was marked by the invasion of the Others, strange creatures who shattered the Wall and invaded the Seven Kingdoms, razing the North and creeping southward in an inexorable wave. They were only stopped by the sudden appearance of Saella Targaryen and her great dragon [IForgetTheName], who burned the Others back into their snowy hiding places. Saella and her dragon were both killed in the final battle, but her eldest daughter deftly negotiated a union between Baratheon and Targaryen, the first peaceful interaction between the two Houses since The Usurper's Rebellion. She married Selwyn and assumed the throne in her own right, as Queen Rhaenys I, while Selwyn's brother Eustace was made Lord of Storm's End and granted his lands in autonomy.

King Selwyn was murdered by Queen Rhaenys' sister, in an attempt to use him as a blood sacrifice to birth a dragon, Queen Rhaenys married Lord Eustace Baratheon. Lord Eustace ruled the Stormlands with a steady hand, and when he died his son Steffon became Lord of Storm's End. Steffon's rule was not peaceful, as factions of the Targaryen Monarchy warred against each other and, as his half-siblings, he was drawn in to support one side against the other. He very nearly lost his castle and his head, supporting Prince Daeron Targaryen against his brother, King Daemon, but thanks to an orgy in which the King took a liking to his sister, Steffon was spared. Steffon ruled the Stormlands capably and quietly, eventually passing his titles and responsibilities to his son, and then his grandson.

House Baratheon is not so powerful as it once was, but neither are they weak. Border raids by and against the Dornish are a constant reality in the Marches, but that fact has been true since the Dornish arrived a thousand years ago, and is not likely to change soon, regardless of what happens in the rest of the realm. Over the reign of Sammael Baratheon, Storm's End's current Lord, House Baratheon has made a few territorial gains in the Stepstones, and established a reasonably wealthy trading fleet, protected by the Storm Fleet of warships. Lord Baratheon styles himself 'Master of the Stepstones' but the title means little beyond his proclamation that it belongs to him. Though he would prefer the fat lands of the Mander to the west, he is ever careful not to draw the ire of his neighbors in that direction, since Lord Tyrell has held the ear of the King in an iron grip for decades.

Lord Sammael's Progeny:

I figured I should throw up a post to clarify. This guy has WAY more bastards than the ones I listed here, these are simply the ones he has acknowledged as his, and given a place in his household. There's probably a black-haired child of some random serving wench in every castle he's ever been to. The bastards on this list, are the ones whose mothers were at least relatively noble born, so they were the bastards he took in as part of his family. The girls got husbands, though they are generally wed to landed Knights or younger sons, rather than important Lords who might balk at having a bastard for a wife. 8 Bastards and 6 trueborn kids, of whom 6 and 5 respectively survived childhood. The oldest would be 48 if he was alive, the youngest is 7. My character is the man.
