Nym rubbed her head where she had been tapped, not that it had hurt at all just that she had not been hit on the head for a while.
"What would you do if you were in her place Lady Isolvelle?"

Isolvelle thought a long moment and answered slowly, "I make it a rule never to put myself in the place of others. I only have one place, and that is my own. Everyone has secrets, dearest Nym, and even one small secret could mean a whole different outcome. Don't you think?"

Nym took a while to answer. It was clear that she was not the brightest of the fosterlings.
"I suppose so." She said eventually. "It depends on what the secret is."

"You're certainly right about that, " Isolvelle answered, standing up and stretching, "so very much depends on secrets, but that is the world in which we live," she sighed, taking another look out the window into the late afternoon sunshine.

"I do not like secrets." Nym said, watching her. "They always seem to cloud a person if they are carrying the wrong sort."

"Right again by my count, Lady Nym," Isolvelle agreed as she stowed the manuscript in an overstuffed bureau drawer.

"Just Nym, no lady." Nym corrected her with a slightly pained look.
She paused for a while.
"Lady Isolvelle? Why do people keep secrets if it will hurt them in the end or they know that all will find out and be upset that they weren't told?"

"That's a very good question, Nym. I'm sure no one knows why people do the things they do. Everyone wants to have a plan and to think that their plan will work out in the end. Of course that isn't always the case, and that's why we have ballads." Isolvelle smiled affectionately at her.

Nym grinned. She didnt understand but she wanted to seem like she did.
"Do you have plans?" She paused. "I mean, before you married Lord Hightower."

Isolvelle smiled sadly, "Not in the same was as the Lady Martell of our story, or even in the way of many of our peers at court," she answered, "I plan only one day at a time and that policy has not lead me so very far astray as yet...What about you, Nym? You are nearly a woman grown these days...What are your plans?"

"I am only four and ten." Nym answered with a smile. "I am not as grown as the rest of them."

"Four and ten is older than a girl of four and ten might think. Only six years your senior and I am the wife of a man who has raised you from birth. Sometimes life happens so fast you scarcely see it changing until you're in a wholly different place altogether."

"Did you want to marry Lord Hightower?" Nym asked, obviously very interested.

Isolvelle's lips quirked to one side as she formulated an answer, "Lord Hightower has been very generous and hospitable to me. He has been kind to us all, and I am very grateful for it," she told Nym honestly.

"He is a good man." Nym said, "I am glad that you are here."
