Brandon spit his sourleaf juice into a spittoon at his feet.
"Forget talk of rights. Tell us how you plan to uphold your duties. That's how we should make the decision."

Manderly said, "We must call up troops to repel the Wildlings, and send diplomats to the south for aid. The Iron Islands are kin now, and we should expect their aid.

Brandon put his hand over his face and shook his head sadly.

Tallhart looked around the crowd, and said, "The proof is in the pudding. I say we name Glover regent."
Glover looked up surprised.
Reed said, "If no one else wants the position give it to Manderly. It is not that important."

"If he's going to invite Ironborn onto our lands, I'd say that's pretty important," Brandon scoffed. "What about Lord Dustin? He's had to fight Wildlings on his own land, so he understand the threat." Brandon looked over at Dustin with a hopeful expression.

Glover looked at Dustin, and said, "You want it fellow?"
Tallhart glanced around, and frowned.

Dustin seemed surprised at the idea, the still mask on his face briefly broken. He recovered his composure and spoke, "I am honored by the suggestion, my lords. I understand the threats facing us, and I understand the importance that the young Lord Stark be raised true. I would do my duty with great fervor if called."

Manderly turned to Dustin, "I was forced to explain my ideas... what would yours be?"

Mors nodded. "A fair question, Lord Manderly. Regarding the wildling threat, it must be understood before it can be addressed. We could call up troops, and maybe each lord should to look after his lands... But we have no place to direct an army as yet. In addition to protecting our lands and smallfolk, we must understand this threat. I believe we must send good men, strong and smart, north to see what the Night's Watch knows. Perhaps even to travel north of the wall with the Watchmen. Once we have an idea of what we face we can adapt our plans to address the threat." He looked around the table before continuing. "And I agree we must send diplomats south to court. As much as it does not fit our own way, we must understand what's going on in the capital between Royce and Lannister. In my experience they will not heed any calls for help in the North. They don't believe in snarks down there."
He placed his hands on the table, "Regarding the Ironmen, I would not invite them onto our land unless there was no other resort. I do not trust their intentions, and I do not believe Lord Greyjoy is a friend to us. Indeed, I think we must look to our western coast and make what preparations we can to discourage trouble from the reavers."

Manderly frowned.
Tallhart spoke, "Dustin no one has anything bad to say of ya, but how many men have you lead in battle? Glover is a grand captain, and with out doubt the best of us when it comes to war."

"Well I've led my own men many times in policing my own lands, and am confident in command." He indicated Lord Glover, "But I would defer to the renowned Lord Garlind Glover and his celebrated talents in the event of war. Would it have been any different for Lord Stark had he gone to war? If I were named regent could I not depend on each of you for counsel?"

Brandon Flint leaned forward. He was pleased with Lord Mors, for it was a good answer. "Lord Dustin has the support of the Flints, of the Mountains, of Widow's Watch and of Flint's Finger. We know him a loyal banner of the Stark, and a noble friend. He'll lead us true, and protect the boy-lord from all foes. Lord Manderly is grandfather to the boy. He's a good man, but he'll show a grandfather's love, and love can some times cloud judgement. Lord Glover is a fierce captain of men, but he's shown no desire for this difficult duty. There will be as much stewardship as swordsmanship in this job. Let us keep Lord Glover's hands free of tiresome quill and parchment, so he can wield Northern steel against the foes we face. There may have been other lords, we might have preferred, with more men at their command, or more lands, but they have not deigned to show themselves at this conclave, so we must make our selection from those who have come to show faith and loyalty to Winterfell."

Glover spoke next, "As far as I am concerned any one would be a more suitable choice then I." He offered a small smile, "Including Dustin."
Reed spoke, "It is Dustin then?"

Tallhart grimaced, and sat down.
Lord Manderly stormed out.
No one spoke.
