Flint bowed his head as he observed the reactions. The gifts had served their purpose.
"And of course we can not forget, the Lady Melinda." He said, holding up a necklace on a thong, on which was strung a small well polished stone. Into the stone was carved a number of ancient runes of the First Men.
"A token. It has charms on it to ensure a happy marriage, and many numerous sons."

Melinda rose, and smiling politely took the necklase from the flint. "Thank you ser, it is most appreciated." She returned to her seat, her eyes avoiding her sister Anya.

This business done, and the information it was intended to extract gleaned, Flint bowed his head again, and stepped backwards, retaking his seat.

Lady Stark glanced once at Lord Stark and followed the Flint to his seat, "They are most wonderful gifts good sir. How are your rooms? I tried to guarentee they would be as comfortable as possible. I had those tapestries hung specially for you."

Brandon nodded, "You are too kind Lady Stark. It's more than we are used to, or deserve."

She smiled at Lord Flint, "That is nonsense. You are a guest, and a loyal man to my husband. It would insult my own honor if I did not make you feel practically at home." She looked around, and added, "If there is anything else at all you need, simply ask. And do not say any nonsense about not deserving it. I will hear no more of that. We are all of one blood in the North."

Brandon nodded, "Yes indeed," he said, conscious that the woman was in fact a Manderly, who worshiped the seven. Perhaps she was overcompensating for that reason.
"I've been made more comfortable then my own home, truly," he said, "And we thank you. Would that we could return the hospitality some day."

Lady Stark smiled, "This is all I ask. Every time I have visited the residence of one of our Liegemen, I have asked to see a view of true beauty." Her gaze turned, and she was clearly staring into the past, "In White Harbor, there are many of my kin who believe that the North is too.... well stark to hold any beauty. They say all the wonders of the world can be found in the lands of the south. I have been to the wall, and crossed the North from sea to sea, and I think they are as foolish as bleating sheeps now. Every where I have seen the most amazing things. I have seen the Wall in all its grandness and mystery. I have seen a heart tree weeping on a misty morning. I have seen the most majestic mountains, and the greenest meadows stretching in front of me." She stopped, and chuckled, "I am so sorry, I do run on sometimes." She shook her head at herself.

Brandon smiled and nodded.
"We'd gladly show you sights of true splendor milady," said Ryam Flint, speaking for his father. "In the high places, where the air is thin, you can see the mountains rising up beyond the wall, on clear days. Or see the way the fog rises over the top of woods. Or climb a stoney height, only to spot a single wildflower clinging to the uppermost rock. The Old Gods have blessed us with many such sights. You and your children should come seem them... some time."

Lady Stark smiled, "I can only hope my duties allow some times to get away. My husband is a grand lord, but his house would fall apart within days if I was not here. The cook hates the Steward, and the steward hates the Measter... I am sorry to complain to you about such details, but these are the battles of a Lord's wife." She laughed lightly.

Ryam smiled, "I do not envy you that milady, for many reasons. Grand things are good, but give me a simple life."

Lady Stark nodded wistfully, "I wish sometimes that Benjen, the children and I could just live in a small cabin in the Wolf's wood. He could hunt to feed us, and I could have a small garden. It is an idle dream, but a pleasant one too." She scrunched up her nose, and made a motion for a servant to refill some wine glasses. She turned back to Ryam as the servant hopped to his task.

Ryam nodded, "Ain't nothing wrong with that," he affirmed, "In any case milady, offer always stands, visit whenever you like."
