"Most Septons that set foot on the islands are drowned for their preachings," Gruffydd replied. "I was raised in the Westerlands, on the Kayce penninsula. My father and mother were killed in a shipwreck, which left me stranded on the beach near drowned, with naught by wet clothes and my father's ring," he said with a slight shrug. "I was knighted at nineteen and sought out my roots from curiosity. I now serve the Thane, my uncle."

"So you know the lance?" Ranulf asks. "Mayhaps we will face each other in this tourney."

"I know it well, and you will indeed see me in the lists, although not if you are knocked out too early, for I mean to be Champion," he replied confidently.

"But you cannot be the champion," Ranulf smiles drolly, "That is my spot. Though I suppose you are welcome to try. Have you been to the capital before?"

"I have not, though I have seen it from the sea, before the War of Stag and Dragon," he replied. "A mighty Citadel, is the Red Keep. Though its walls are only as strong as the men who stand upon them."

A brief flash of anger passes over Ranulf's face at the mention of the war, but it is gone so quickly it could have been imagined. "It is not so impressive, really. Larger than Oldtown, but a city of shit and mud, not brick and stone. Though it does have its pleasures."

"Most cities do. I've heard more men die in cities from the sheer stench, than any other factor," he replied, noticing the brief change in his host's expression, but not commenting on it. "I imagine the competition at this tournament will be quite fierce, and then you must factor in those competitors not in this room."

Ranulf laughs. "Oh, I have no doubt. Most of the Seven Kingdoms will be in attendance, with that prize. Do you know anyone else who is competing?"

"Not in particular, I doubt anyone else from the Islands will go. My people are not much for tournaments," he replied. "Although for a purse that sizeable I do not see many people avoiding the event. Even the archery is highly prized, and any peasant with a bow might think himself good enough to win a fortune barely imaginable."

"True," Ranulf says. "I suppose I'll enter the archery as well, but there's no glory in hitting a target. As you said, any peasant boy can do it."

"Indeed, although seeing a cloud of arrows on the battlefield forces one to accept archers' value in war," Gruffydd replied. "When do you mean to travel east?"

"In a few days, I should think," Ranulf responds, "It's a long voyage, and I wouldn't want to miss the damn thing because a spring squall slows us down."

"Indeed, I as well, did not plan to tarry overlong, although your fine hospitality is something I ought not pass up while it is offered. It's not often we get pork this good on the Islands, normally it's just goat, or fish," he replied with a slight grimace.

"Well, you have the Arbor's hospitality as long as you want it. Bread and salt and wine and hearth, et cetera," Ranulf says. "But you're welcome to sail with us when we leave."

"I think I shall," Gruffydd replied. "After all, one ship alone is a nice target for pirates, and there is strength in greater numbers," he added with a slight smirk.
