Manderly frowned, "Umber? Not the type to hire knives in the dark either. So some one wants us confused, and scared... could it be connected to the wildlings?"

Brandon sighed and nodded, "It is not impossible. We have been told of a strange force moving among the Wildlings, terrifying them. Men who wear masks of Gold, and have been butchering the other wildling like cattle. But the men we questioned spoke mostly onsense. Of them riding bats, and all manner of sorcery. But they are clearly dreaded, even by a people who are not keen to fear most men."

Manderly sighed, "Bats? Wildlings ride bats?"

"I said it was nonsense," Brandon replied.
"My father's point is that whatever these Augers are, they fill the wildlings with terror." Ryam spoke up. "So they'd best be taken seriously. As to whether they have a reach to arrange a murder of a Stark in Winterfell?"

"I can not picture the wildlings murdering a stark in his keep. If they could... they would have long ago."

"Yes, that's so." Brandon replied. "And why murder Lady Anya? What possible value has that?"

Manderly snorted, "To save us all from her tongue."
Lady Stark snapped, "Father!"

Brandon raised an eyebrow, "not charitable, but no less true, she was not beloved."

Manderly said, "Could she have been the target, and Benjen stumbled upon the scene?"

"But if he stumbled upon his beloved sister being murdered, surely he'd have raised alarm, and fought?" Danny asked.
"what if they done for each other?" coughed Quent, "I know it ain't polite to say so, but Danny did find Lord Stark's knife under his bed. Maybe Anya stabbed him. Then he had enough strength left to gut her back, and stagger on down the stairs."
"There's the question of the blade as well." Hother said. Danny nodded, and withdrew the Cat's eye dagger from his waist band and held it up for Manderly to inspect without actually turning it over.

Manderly took the blade, "Well if it was Anya that makes everything far simpler."

OOC: Danny said "without turning it over."
He took a step back, and tightened his grip. "Simpler how," Hother asked.

"Perhaps..." said Brandon, "But I think we are best served by assuming the worst and preparing accordingly."
