"I know, Arya, I know," Joanna said reassuringly. "But I think you underestimate my connection with Daemon in this instance. I don't think he will do me any harm for simply giving my favour to a man."

Arya shrugged and looked like she wanted to say something but didnt, "As you say my princess."

Noting that something was wrong, Joanna prompted "Arya, if you have something to say about the King, please say it. I am optimistic but I'd rather be in full possession of my friends' opinions, so that I can be aware of the situation as all see it."

"Would you promise not to tell him that I spoke of this?" Arya asked meekly.

"Of course. You are my dear friend, Arya, and I have made Daemon no promises to tell him everything. I'm certain he doesn't tell me everything either, so it's only fair."
She laughed.

"Well when we talked one time, he prompted to ask me who I was interested in and he said he would kill the man. I was frightened."

"Oh."
Joanna frownedi n thought.
"Who was the man? Perhaps it was that which made all the difference?"

"It doesn't make a difference. Why would he want to kill any man that I loved?"

"Well, there is one possible answer, of course, which I'm sure has occured to you already. Daemon is...strange when it comes to the women of his house, and yet he must know that you desire marriage eventually. Was the man someone who was perhaps not fit to wed a Dayne?"

"He loves you, which is a relief to me. If I choose someone I do not want him interfering."

"I'll do my best to see that he does not," Joanna murmrued. "I don't want you made unhappy so I would be happy to help you out if ever you need it."

"Even if it put you at odds with the King?" Arya asked critically.

"Yes. All evidence thus far has shown that Daemon loves me enough for me to be able to deal with his anger if I need to do so. "
She shrugged.
"Perhaps I am the only one who can get away with risking his wrath. I hope we don't have to find that out, though."

Arya nodded and was satisfied with her answer, surprised even. "No, but I think he has other concerns to worry about than me marrying someone he doesn't think worthy in any case. I am glad for your support."

Joanna smiled.
"If Daemon has other concerns, and I think you're right that he does, then you may never have to worry again. I hope not. I will throw my support behind you no matter who you choose. So long as he is someone you love and who can take care of you in the style you deserve."
