Marianne watched as her hand was tied to her elder brothers.
"How is mother?" She asked, having not been to see the former queen for quite some time.

"She is still taken with her sickness, Marianna," Maekar responded stiffly, wondering if entering this event had been such a good idea, "but my maester assures me that we needn't worry. She will be back to her old self before long."

"Thats good to hear. I want to visit soon, if that is alright with you Maeker." Mari said. "The Vale is always pretty this time of year."

"Yes, of course, I'm sure mother would like that," Maekar said, though his tone hadn't softened, "I will be returning as soon as the tourney is completed, if you'd like to join me."

"I might do that." She said thoughtfully. "Thought I dont know what Steffon has planned."
Marianne paused for a moment. "Loosen up Maeker, Im not that bad weilding a sword."

"On the contrary, I saw the list of other pairs and I think I've gotten one of the better ones, sister."
"Perhaps we should practice some basic manoeuvres before the contest begins," he suggested, examining his shield.

Mari smiled and twisted her wrist, making sure that she could use the unfamilier sword as well as she could.
"I agree, we should do alright on this!"

Maekar nodded, "good, let's try to move together with a block and counter-strike."
"I move my left forward and raise my shield, then together we move our tied feet and your right foot as you swing back."
He started the manoeuvre.

She tried to complete it and almost toppled, unused to having to rely on another.
"Sorry Maekar, try again?"

Maekar nodded, "watch your balance, Marienne. Move along with me this time."
He moved his left foot forward and raised his shield.

She did as he said and managed not to ruin the manuevor.
"Maekar, what do you think of using the longbow?"

"The longbow?" Maekar said, looking at his sister like she wasn't very bright. "I think the idea of the contest is to fight sword and shield, most likely any non melee weapons won't be allowed. Also, I have no talent for the bow."

"I didnt mean here brother. I meant in general. How do you feel about it as a weapon?" Mari said, seeming thoughtful.

Maekar frowned. "You want my opinion on the longbow? I think it is a useful weapon, that takes skill to use, and allows an enemy to be taken down or at least severely injured before he can reach you. Some knights who's pride will be the death of them believe it to be cowardly weapon, because it means you are afraid to face your opponent in a direct test of skill, but those men are easily silenced with an arrow to the throat. In battle, archers form a necessary part of any strategy."
"Why?"

"Just something that someone said to me, that it was no weapon for a man, yet I feel that it is a great weapon, at least I favour it in any case. And many in the contest the other day were men."
She frowned a little.
